Finding
Companies House listed 1,323 active UK companies with drainage in their name when Whito counted on 6 September 2026, and the two biggest published cost guides, read the same day, disagree by more than double on the price of a basic CCTV drain survey.

Updated 6 September 2026. Compiled from Whito’s published cross-trade studies and from public registers and published price guides read at source on the date shown beside each figure. Refreshed with each quarterly edition of the Whito AI Visibility Index.
This page folds every checkable UK drainage figure Whito holds into one place. Each entry names its source, its base and the date it was read or collected. Where a figure comes from a public register or a published price guide rather than a Whito study, the entry says so plainly.
Companies House listed 1,323 active UK companies with “drainage” in their name on 6 September 2026, and another 409 carrying “drain” as a word. The two biggest published cost guides cannot agree what a basic CCTV drain survey costs, with one pricing it at more than double the other. Water UK attributes 94% of sewer blockages to wet wipes. The rest of this page puts a source and a date on those figures and on every other drainage number Whito holds.
The key figures
Sources: Companies House, gov.uk, Water UK, Checkatrade and MyJobQuote, all read at source on 6 September 2026, plus Whito’s own published studies. Each figure is sourced individually below.
The company register
1. 1,323 active UK companies carry “drainage” in their registered name, and another 409 carry “drain” as a word. The two counts overlap where a name carries both words, so they are reported separately rather than summed. A name-based count is a floor, not a census: a drainage firm trading under a family name is not counted, and a registered name is not proof of a trading business.

2. A drainage firm that carries waste away must hold an Environment Agency waste carrier registration. It costs £191.02, is usually free for a business that only transports waste it produced itself, upper tier renewal is £130.25 every three years, and the fine for operating unregistered is unlimited. The register is public and searchable, which is why Whito treats a published registration number as a checkable proof point for drainage firms.

What a drainage job costs
3. Checkatrade’s cost guide prices an unblock at £85 on average, a call-out at £60, an emergency call-out at £180, jetting at £185 on average with a £120 to £250 range, a CCTV survey at £150 to £300, and drain lining at £110 per linear metre.

4. MyJobQuote’s guide prices general drain clearing at around £100, jetting at £70 to £175, rodding at £80 to £145, a basic CCTV survey at around £90, a full survey with mapping at £250 to £350, and an emergency call-out at £100 to £200.
Source: MyJobQuote drain clearance cost guide, updated 2 September 2026, read at source 6 September 2026.
5. The two guides disagree by more than double on a basic CCTV survey, around £90 against a £200 average, and one guide’s average jetting price of £185 sits above the other guide’s entire £70 to £175 range. A customer who reads only one guide gets a confident number that the other guide contradicts, which is why Whito’s advice to drainage firms is to publish their own ranges.

The quotable version
One cost guide’s average jetting price sits above the other guide’s entire published range, and their basic CCTV survey prices are more than double apart, in Whito’s same-day reading of the two biggest UK guides.

What AI recommends in the nearest trades
6. Asked for the best plumber in 13 UK towns, Google’s AI named an independent local firm every time. No national chain was recommended in any town, and every named firm carried a Google rating between 4.8 and 5.0. Plumbing is the closest sibling trade to drainage that Whito has tested, and the pattern favours small local firms with strong review profiles.

7. Checkatrade sat behind 50 of the 60 Google AI Mode trade answers Whito logged, 83%, across electricians, plumbers and roofers in 20 UK towns. A review platform or comparison portal sat behind the recommendation in 18 of 20 towns.

8. Reddit was ChatGPT’s most cited source when asked for a trustworthy local business, appearing in 10 of 18 answers. Yell, Yelp and Facebook were cited zero times.

9. Of 728 AI-recommended UK businesses Whito checked against Companies House, 38, or 5.2%, could not be verified as an active company trading in or near the recommended town.

10. 19 of 55 top-rated UK electricians, plumbers and roofers, 35%, have no website at all for an AI engine to read, only a Google listing. A firm with no site leaves the engines nothing to quote.

The blockage problem
11. Water UK attributes 94% of sewer blockages to wet wipes, counts 2.9 billion wipes flushed a year, and puts the cost of clearing wipe-caused blockages at £200 million a year. These are the water industry’s own figures for the public sewer network; blockages on private drains, the ones a drainage firm is called to, sit outside them.

The trade bodies
12. The National Association of Drainage Contractors lists over 350 certified members at £400 a year, and the Water Jetting Association unified its codes of practice into the WJA Black Code in 2026. Neither is a legal requirement. Drain and sewer jetting sat under the WJA’s Red Code before the 2026 unification.

Method and known limits
This page is a compilation. Its figures come from three kinds of source, and each entry says which: Whito’s own published cross-trade studies, public registers read at source on a named date, and published price guides read at source on a named date. Nothing here has been restated from another statistics site. The samples differ by study and date, so figures are not directly comparable across entries.
The known limits. Whito has not yet run a drainage-specific AI engine study, so the AI figures above come from the nearest tested trades; the drainage study is scoped and will publish on the Whito drainage hub first. The Companies House counts are name-based and word-matched, a floor rather than a census. No dated public UK figure exists for drainage demand seasonality; the method for producing one is five years of weekly Google Trends data for blocked drain searches, and Whito will publish the chart when the data has been pulled, not before. This page is refreshed quarterly with the AI Visibility Index; the next edition is due December 2026. Corrections are noted on the page with a date, never quietly edited.

Common questions
How many drainage companies are there in the UK?
Companies House listed 1,323 active UK companies with “drainage” in their registered name on 6 September 2026, and another 409 carrying “drain” as a word. The counts overlap where a name carries both words, and a name-based count is a floor rather than a census, since many drainage firms trade under names without either word.
How much does drain unblocking cost in the UK?
The two biggest published guides disagree. Checkatrade prices an unblock at £85 on average with jetting at £185, while MyJobQuote prices general clearing at around £100 with jetting at £70 to £175. A basic CCTV survey runs from around £90 in one guide to a £200 average in the other. Ask any firm for its range in writing before booking.
What causes most drain and sewer blockages?
Water UK attributes 94% of sewer blockages to wet wipes, counts 2.9 billion wipes flushed a year, and puts the cost of clearing wipe-caused blockages at £200 million a year. Those figures cover the public sewer network; blockages on private drains sit outside them.
Do AI assistants recommend drainage firms?
Whito has not yet run a drainage-specific engine study. In the nearest tested trade, Google’s AI named an independent local plumber in all 13 towns asked, and across electricians, plumbers and roofers Checkatrade sat behind 50 of 60 AI answers. The drainage engine study will publish on the Whito drainage hub first.
