The Whito framework runs Start, Build, Scale, in that order. For locksmiths the stages have unusual shapes, because half the demand is unplannable and the customer’s deciding emotion is fear. The framework holds; the contents change.
Start: checkable and answerable
Two foundations, nothing else. Checkable: MLA number if held, company number, DBS status, real name and face, in text on a simple site and a properly configured Google Business Profile. Answerable: a phone that always rings somewhere, a missed-call text-back, honest published hours. A locksmith who is checkable and answerable is ahead of most of the trade, including the national operations, without spending a pound.
Build: prices, reviews, planned services
Build adds the layers that compound. Published from-prices with the VAT position stated, next to a plain explanation of bait pricing with the MLA as source. A doorstep review habit capturing job, area and response time. A page per planned service, anti-snap upgrades, uPVC mechanism repair, post-burglary lock changes, landlord and letting agent work, each with a from-price, because the planned work is searched calmly and bought on the reputation the emergency work built. Letting agents deserve a Build-stage letter of their own: they buy lock changes on every tenancy change, and one agent is worth fifty doorsteps.
Scale: paid visibility on a defended base
Scale in this trade means paid search on emergency terms, a second van, or commercial contracts, and each only works on top of Build. Paid emergency clicks are contested by call centres, so measure to answered calls and hold a budget you can sustain. Google’s Local Services Ads did not list UK locksmiths as an eligible category at our 4 September 2026 check, so there is no vetted shortcut to buy: organic trust does the vetting instead. And keep the monthly identity search running as you grow, because the MLA’s casework shows it is the established, visible firms the clones target.
Common questions
What marketing should a new locksmith do first?
Be checkable and answerable: proof in text on a simple site and profile, and a phone that never rings out unanswered. Both are free and matter more than any advertising in an emergency trade.
How do locksmiths get planned, non-emergency work?
Service pages with from-prices for upgrades, uPVC repairs and post-burglary changes, plus direct introductions to letting agents, who buy lock work on every tenancy change. Emergency reputation feeds planned demand.
When should a locksmith pay for advertising?
After the free foundations hold: checkable proof, published prices, steady reviews and answered calls. Paid emergency clicks are expensive and contested, so they only pay on top of a base that converts.
