Marketing for painters and decorators
Few trades photograph as well as painting, and most painters never show the work. This page covers the part you control: whether a homeowner can find you, check you and see your work before a platform takes its cut.
FINDING
Checkatrade was cited in 50 of the 60 Google AI Mode answers Whito collected for electricians, plumbers and roofers across 20 UK towns on 22 August 2026, 83%, while only 9% of UK homeowners rate a builder’s website among their top three factors.

What we know, and what we have not measured yet
Whito has not yet run an AI visibility study on painters and decorators. The figures above come from cross-industry work: 159 Google AI Mode answers logged in August 2026, 64 tradespeople checked against Companies House in July 2026, and 200 independent business websites read for our price transparency study in August 2026. They describe the trades as a whole, so treat them as background rather than a painting-specific verdict.
What we have measured for neighbouring trades is blunt. When we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode for electricians and roofers, around half the recommended firms could not be matched to an active registered company in the town named. The engines are already answering “painter and decorator near me”. The question is whether they can read anything about you.
When the painting and decorating engine study runs, it lands on this page first. Until then, the AI Visibility Index shows how the method works across eight other sectors.
Whito need-to-know for painters and decorators
- There is no licence. Anyone can trade as a painter and decorator, so proof does the work a licence would. A Companies House number, insurance named in text, and PDA or Dulux Select membership if you hold it.
- Your photo library is the asset. A dated before-and-after library of real jobs is proof no competitor can copy and no platform owns. Most painters keep it on a phone and never publish it.
- Shared leads are priced against you. UK trade leads sell for roughly £2 to £40 each and go to three to six firms at once, in Whito’s July 2026 check of published platform prices. Free channels first.
- Prices win by default. Fewer than half of independent UK business websites publish any price at all. A published day rate and a few room examples put you in a minority that gets quoted.
Why most painting businesses struggle to get found
Invisible at the moment of choice
The homeowner shortlists on Google and, increasingly, inside AI answers. In our June 2026 study, 35% of top-rated tradespeople had no website at all for an engine to read, only a Google listing.
Renting attention from platforms
Checkatrade appeared in 83% of the AI trade answers we logged. Platform membership can make sense, but if the platform is your only presence, you pay rent on every job forever.
Nothing that proves the quality
Painting is bought on trust and finish. A wall of five-star reviews that never name the job, the street or the finish reads like noise, and AI engines skip it.
What actually works
In this order. Do not skip to ads.
A complete Google Business Profile
Right category, your real trading name, services listed, ten dated job photos, and a review flow that runs on invoice day. Free, and it carried 81% of the AI answers we logged.
Proof in plain text
Company number, insurance, PDA or Dulux Select membership written as text on your site, not hidden in a badge image. Machines cannot read a JPEG of a logo.
Reviews that name the job
Ask on invoice day, and ask for specifics: the job type, the town, the finish. Specific reviews rank, generic ones decorate.
A page per job type, per area
Interior repaints, exterior repaints, wallpapering, spraying. One page each, with local photos and a price range. These are the pages search and AI engines quote.
Published prices with honest caveats
A day rate and two or three worked examples. If you will not publish a number, the cost guides above you will, and their number frames your quote.
Stop buying shared leads first
Before any paid channel, cancel the leads that three or more rivals also receive. Reinvest the same money in the five items above, which you own outright.
Quick wins this week
Put your proof in the footer
Company number, insurance cover and any memberships, typed as text on every page of your site and into your Google profile. Under an hour, free.
Text your last five customers
Ask for a Google review that names the job and the town. Five specific reviews in a week changes how your profile reads.
Publish ten job photos
Pick ten befores and afters from your phone, caption them in plain English with job and area, upload to your site and profile. Done in an evening.
Common mistakes
Buying leads before fixing free channels
Shared leads cost £2 to £40 and go to up to six firms. Paying for enquiries while your own profile is half empty is renting what you could own.
Stuffing keywords into your business name
Google ran an algorithmic suspension wave in April 2026 that hit thousands of service-area profiles. “Dave Smith Decorators Best Painter Leeds” is a suspension risk, not a strategy.
Marketing only in Facebook groups
Group posts vanish in a day, cannot be searched from outside and are invisible to every engine. Post there if you like, but publish the same photos somewhere you own.

The register that matters
There is no painter’s licence. Proof stands in for one.
Anyone in the UK can trade as a painter and decorator. The baseline check is Companies House, free and public. The voluntary schemes worth naming in text on your site: the Painting and Decorating Association, which vets members for insurance and workmanship and runs a public find-a-decorator search, with membership from £19.50 a month at published rates. Dulux Select Decorators, which checks references, inspects a live job, requires £1m public liability cover and backs members with a 24 month workmanship guarantee. TrustMark, the government endorsed quality scheme. For commercial and new-build sites, most principal contractors require a CSCS card even though it is not law. All checked at source on 4 September 2026. If none of this is written on your website in plain text, no engine can use it and no customer can check it.

Looking for a painter and decorator instead?
Whito is a marketing guide for the trade, not a booking site. If you are trying to hire, the Whito directory lists verified UK businesses, and every listing is checked against the public record before it appears.
Whito is independent and companies cannot pay to appear in our guidance. This page is marketing advice, not health and safety or legal advice: check CSCS, HSE and scheme requirements with the bodies themselves.
