Nobody shops around with water coming through the light fitting. Emergency pricing exists because of that, and mostly it is fair. The trick is knowing what fair looks like before you need it.

The mistake: paying the emergency rate for a non-emergency

A real emergency is uncontrolled water, no heating in winter with a vulnerable person in the house, or suspected gas. Almost everything else can wait until morning, and morning is 30 to 50 percent cheaper. If you can stop the water at the stopcock, you have usually bought yourself the standard rate.

What emergency plumbing costs in 2026

ItemTypical range
Emergency call-out fee£100 to £120
Emergency hourly rate£75 to £150
Burst pipe repair£50 to £200 for the repair itself
Unblock a toilet£75 to £150
Fix a leakaround £100

A standard daytime call-out, £60 to £120 often including the first hour, is the comparison to hold in your head.

The two-minute protections

Find your stopcock today, not during the flood. That single piece of knowledge converts most emergencies into appointments.

On the phone, ask three things: the call-out fee, the hourly rate after it, and whether the first hour is included. Ask for the total for the likely fix. A firm that will not give numbers on the phone is telling you something.

Be careful with national emergency call-handling brands that subcontract the job. You pay a premium for the middleman. A local firm with a real address and a Companies House record is usually cheaper and answerable afterwards. The Whito directory shows which local firms are checked and established, and several list 24-hour cover.

The sharp takeaway

Learn where the stopcock is, save two local checked numbers in your phone now, and ask for the three prices before anyone gets in a van. The best time to choose an emergency plumber is any time except during an emergency.
