Ask what a new bathroom costs and you will hear anything from £4,000 to £20,000. All of those numbers are real. The difference is scope, and scope is where bathroom budgets die.
The mistake: budgeting for the suite, not the job
The suite is the visible fraction. The money goes on labour, tiling, first-fix plumbing, waterproofing and the things found behind the old bath. A £2,000 suite in a £7,000 project is normal, not a rip-off.

What moves the price
Moving soil pipes and water feeds is the big one: keeping the layout is the single best way to protect the budget. Wet rooms need tanking done properly or they fail expensively. Tiling area quietly drives days of labour. And anything discovered when the old suite comes out, rot, lead pipe, botched previous work, sits outside any quote.
Hold back a contingency of ten to fifteen percent and treat a quote that includes provisional sums clearly labelled as a good sign, not a bad one.
The checks
A bathroom fitter needs no licence, so the quality signals are voluntary: WaterSafe approval matters here because bathroom work touches the water supply, and an approved contractor can self-certify notifiable work instead of waiting on the water company. CIPHE or APHC membership is a real signal. Electrics in bathrooms are notifiable and need a Part P registered electrician. The sharp takeaway
Fix the layout, fix the scope, then get three itemised quotes against that same scope. The bathroom that stays where it is costs thousands less than the one that moves a metre. Keep ten percent back for what the old bath is hiding.
