This guide explains what training money buys and how to tell a qualification from a certificate before paying. It quotes no course prices, because Whito has not yet collected them and will not invent them; providers publish their own. The register facts below were read 5 October 2026.
The distinction that decides the value
A regulated qualification is awarded by an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual and sits on the national qualifications framework; anyone can verify it exists on Ofqual’s public register. Everything else, however glossy, is a certificate of attendance: it means what the issuer’s reputation makes it mean. Neither is a scam by definition. The failure is paying qualification money for certificate paper, and the fix is one search on the Ofqual register before booking.
What moves the price
Contact hours and delivery first: classroom days cost more than e-learning licences. Assessment second: regulated qualifications carry real assessment and quality assurance costs. Equipment-heavy trades training, plant, gas, electrical, prices the kit and the test centre as much as the teaching. And accreditation logos are only worth what they verify to; “CPD accredited” in particular is an unregulated phrase doing heavy lifting on thousands of sales pages.
Apprenticeships: the funded route
Apprenticeship training in England is funded through the levy system, and only providers on the Department for Education’s Apprenticeship Providers and Assessment Register, APAR, may deliver it. The register is public and downloadable. For an employer, the provider conversation starts with APAR status, since without it the funding route does not exist.
Who regulates the provider themselves
Ofsted inspects apprenticeship and further-education provision, and its reports are public. Short commercial courses sit outside that net, which is exactly why the qualification check above matters more for them.
The questions that protect your budget
Is the outcome a regulated qualification, and which awarding organisation, checkable on the Ofqual register? If an apprenticeship, are you on APAR, and what does your last Ofsted report say? What does the price include, assessment and resits included? What happens to fees if the course is cancelled or I withdraw? A provider selling real outcomes answers all four in writing.
