Skips are sized in cubic yards, the industry never explains what that means, and ordering wrong in either direction costs money: too small means a second skip, too big means paying to move air. This guide puts the common sizes in plain English. It quotes no prices; sizes and rules are the stable facts, prices move by postcode and are the subject of a separate Whito collection.
The common sizes
A 4 yard midi skip suits a bathroom rip-out, a small garden clearance, or roughly 30 to 40 bin bags of waste. A 6 yard builders’ skip is the all-rounder: kitchen refits, medium garden jobs, around 50 to 60 bags. An 8 yard skip is the big domestic standard, full house clearances and larger renovations, roughly 60 to 80 bags. Larger skips exist, 10 and 12 yards and beyond, mostly for light, bulky waste rather than heavy material.
The weight rule that overrides the size
Lorries have legal lifting limits, so dense waste changes the rules: soil, rubble, concrete and tiles fill a skip’s weight allowance long before its volume. Many firms restrict heavy waste to smaller skips or sell dedicated rubble skips. If your job is mostly hardcore or soil, say so when booking; the right answer is often a smaller skip than you expected, filled completely.
What never goes in
Certain items are banned from ordinary skips because the tip handles them separately: among them asbestos, fridges and freezers, tyres, gas bottles, paints and solvents, batteries, mattresses in many areas, and plasterboard mixed with general waste. Each usually has a separate disposal route or a surcharge. Hiding them under other waste does not work, skips are sorted, and the surcharge arrives with an admin fee attached.
Road or drive
A skip on your own drive needs no permission. A skip on the road needs a council permit, arranged by the skip firm, priced by the council, and often subject to lighting and cone rules. If the skip must sit on the road, ask for the permit cost and lead time up front; it is part of the real price.
The level-load rule
Skips are collected filled level with the top, not domed. Overfilled skips get refused, part-emptied at your expense, or surcharged. If you are debating two sizes and expect to dome the smaller one, you have already chosen the larger one.
