This guide explains what drives skip hire prices in the UK. It quotes no skip price table, because Whito has not yet collected skip prices and will not invent them. Skip prices are among the most widely published in any trade, which is exactly why a Whito collection, published prices only, with the collection date, is specified and will appear here when run. The figures below are official registration fees, not skip prices.

What you are actually paying for

A skip price folds together haulage to and from your address, the skip’s time on site, tipping and sorting charges at the transfer station, and, where the skip sits on the road, a council permit billed at whatever your council charges. Tipping costs vary sharply by area and by what goes in the skip, which is why the same size skip carries different prices two postcodes apart, and why any national single price is someone’s average, not your quote.

Size, and the surcharge list

Prices step up with size, the common domestic sizes being 4, 6 and 8 cubic yards, and step again for what the tip charges extra to take: plasterboard, mattresses, fridges, tyres. A cheap headline price with a long surcharge list routinely lands dearer than an honest all-in one. Ask for the surcharge list before comparing anything.

Carrier or broker: the margin question

Many skip websites are brokers: they take the booking, add a margin, and pass the job to a local carrier. Brokering is legal. For the price, it means the same lorry and the same skip can cost less booked direct from the carrier. For the law, it means the registration that matters is the carrier’s. Ask who is actually collecting, and check that name.

The register behind every lawful skip

Anyone transporting, brokering or dealing in waste for profit must be on the Environment Agency’s public register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers. New upper tier registration costs £191.02 and renewal £130.25 every three years (gov.uk, read 5 October 2026), which is to say the lawful overhead is modest, and a firm that cannot show a registration has chosen not to have one. The register is searchable by name and free to check.

The questions that protect you

What is your waste carrier registration number, and is the collecting firm’s number different? Is the price all-in, and what is on the surcharge list? Do I need a permit at my address and is it included? Where does the waste get tipped? A registered firm answers all four from memory.
