The two commonest security jobs run on two different licences, and the difference is not pedantry: it decides who may lawfully stand where, and it quietly decides whether your security contract is worth anything. This guide separates them.

What a door supervisor licence covers

Door supervision is the licence for guarding at licensed premises, venues serving alcohol during opening hours, and it carries training in physical intervention and conflict management that the guarding licence does not. Pubs, bars, clubs and events with bars generally need door supervisors, not guards. A door supervisor can also do guarding work, which is why staffing firms prize the licence.

What a security guarding licence covers

Security guarding covers guarding premises, property and people: construction sites, warehouses, retail floors, offices, static and patrol work. It does not cover door supervision at licensed premises. A guard on a nightclub door is the classic wrong-licence placement, unlawful however experienced the guard.

Which your situation needs

Venue serving alcohol: door supervisors. Construction site, empty property, warehouse: guards. Corporate reception: usually guarding. Event with a bar: door supervision for the licensed areas, often a mix across the site. Retail: guarding, unless the premises and role cross into licensed-premises territory. When a job sits on the line, the licensing condition on your own premises licence often settles it, and your security contractor should be able to explain the call they are making.

The hiring mistakes the gap causes

Booking “security” generically and letting the supplier decide, then discovering at inspection that the door staff hold guarding licences. Comparing quotes across the two licence types as if they were one price, door supervision generally costs more, so the cheap quote is sometimes just the wrong licence. And accepting a rota with no licence numbers on it, which makes the badge check impossible before the night it matters.

The one-line protection

Put the licence type in the booking: “staff supplied will hold SIA door supervision licences” or the guarding equivalent, and ask for licence numbers with the rota. A professional firm does this without being asked. The difference between the two licences is their bread and butter; a supplier vague about it is telling you something.
