Pharmacies close, move and change hands constantly, and the internet does not keep up: search engines and AI assistants confidently recommend branches that no longer exist. The General Pharmaceutical Council’s register of pharmacy premises is the public record of where a real pharmacy actually operates in Great Britain, and checking it takes two minutes. This guide shows how, and when to bother.
The premises check
The GPhC register at pharmacyregulation.org is searchable by pharmacy name and address. A current entry means a registered pharmacy operates at that address, under that name, with a superintendent pharmacist responsible for it. If the name you found online is not on the register at that address, the listing you found is stale: the branch has closed, moved, or been sold and renamed. The register, not the listing, is right.
When the check earns its two minutes
Before travelling to an unfamiliar pharmacy found online, especially out of hours when a wasted trip matters. Before handing a prescription to a pharmacy whose listing looks dusty, no recent reviews, old photographs, a phone number that rings out. And always, without exception, before buying medicines from a pharmacy website you have not used before.
The online pharmacy check
A legitimate UK online pharmacy is a registered pharmacy with a premises entry like any other, and its website should name the registered pharmacy, its GPhC premises number and its superintendent pharmacist. Check the number on the register. An online “pharmacy” offering prescription medicines with no GPhC registration, no named pharmacist and no UK address is not a pharmacy, whatever the design budget suggests, and prescription medicines without prescriptions is the giveaway that ends the conversation.
Individuals as well as premises
The GPhC also registers pharmacists and pharmacy technicians individually, searchable by name and registration number. For almost all customers the premises check is the one that matters; the individual register exists when you need it.
If you run a pharmacy
Keep the register entry, your website, your Google profile and your NHS listing agreeing to the letter, name, address and hours, and update all of them the same week anything changes. The stale listings this guide teaches customers to catch are the same stale listings that send your would-be customers to a locked door two streets away.
