Most small business owners are still refreshing their analytics hoping last year’s traffic returns. It will not. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you can fix the actual problem.

~50%
of Google searches now show an AI answer box
20-40%
traffic drop on affected pages for smaller sites
More
clicks go to brands quoted inside the AI answer

What happened

Google now puts an AI Overview, that grey summary box, at the top of a large share of searches. Recent 2026 figures put it on close to half of all queries, and some measures of the wider results page are higher still. Google’s AI Mode pushes this further by answering the question in full, so the person never needs to click a single blue link.

The result is what the industry calls zero-click search. Someone asks a question, gets the answer on the page, and moves on. Your website was never opened.

Smaller sites are getting hit hardest. Estimates of traffic loss on affected terms range widely, but drops of a fifth to two fifths are common for the sort of informational pages small businesses rely on.

Why it matters

If your marketing plan is “rank on Google and wait for clicks”, a big chunk of that plan just stopped working. Not because you did anything wrong. The page your customer used to click is now a box they read and never leave.

But there is a second number worth knowing. Brands quoted inside the AI answer get more clicks, not fewer, than brands that are only listed below it. So the game has changed from ranking to being the source the answer trusts. That is a different job, and most owners are still playing the old one.

The old gameThe new game
✗ Rank higher than rivals✓ Be the source the AI quotes
✗ Win the click✓ Win the citation
✗ Pages that read like a brochure✓ Pages that answer the real question
✗ Measure clicks only✓ Measure calls, enquiries, brand searches

What to do about it

This is a Start problem before it is a Scale problem. You do not need more content or a bigger ad budget. You need your existing pages to be easy for a machine to quote.

Answer the real question first. On every key page, put the direct answer in the first two lines, in plain words. AI tools lift clear answers and skip waffle.

Add the boring facts. Prices, areas you cover, opening hours, what you do and do not do. Vague pages do not get quoted because there is nothing to quote.

Use a clear question as a heading, then answer it. “How much does a full rewire cost in Leeds?” beats “Our Services” every time.

Make yourself checkable. A real address, real reviews, and consistent details across the web tell an AI you are a business worth citing, not a brochure.

Stop measuring only clicks. Track calls, enquiries, and searches for your name. Being the answer is worth more than being a link nobody opens.

The takeaway

The click you are mourning is gone. The citation that replaces it is up for grabs, and most of your competitors have not noticed. Make your pages the clearest answer to the questions your customers actually ask, and you get picked. Keep waiting for 2023 traffic to return, and you get skipped.
