This guide explains how home care is priced and the routes that pay for it. It quotes no agency rates, because Whito has not yet collected home care prices and will not invent them; Whito’s published home care research covers the CQC register, and a price collection will join it. The figures below are official, read 5 October 2026.

What an hourly rate contains

A careworker’s visit carries far more than the visit: the National Living Wage, £12.71 an hour from April 2026, is the floor for the worker’s time, and on top of it sit travel time between visits, mileage, employer’s National Insurance and pension, training, insurance, registration and the agency’s running costs. The Homecare Association publishes a Minimum Price for Homecare built from exactly those parts; the arithmetic explains why a lawful hourly rate sits far above the wage itself, and why a rate near the bare minimum wage should raise questions about what is not being paid for.

Visits, and how they are billed

Agencies price by visit length, full hours, half hours and short calls, with short visits dearest per minute because travel does not shrink with the visit. Waking nights, live-in care and specialist dementia care are separate products with separate pricing. Ask for the rate card in writing, including evening, weekend and bank holiday uplifts, and mileage charged to you if any.

Who pays: the three routes

Council funding first: a needs assessment from the local authority, and a financial assessment that decides your contribution; those with assets below the thresholds can have care arranged and part or fully funded, and anyone can ask for the assessment. Direct payments are the same council money paid to you to arrange care yourself, agency or personal assistant. And NHS continuing healthcare fully funds care, at home included, where needs are primarily health needs; it is assessed, not means-tested, and worth pursuing properly where it might apply.

Self-funding without overpaying

Compare agencies on the same written basis: visit lengths, uplifts, mileage, and what happens when a carer cancels. Continuity matters as much as rate, and the cheapest rota that sends a different stranger weekly is rarely the cheap option by month three.

The check before any rate card

Agencies providing personal care must be registered with the Care Quality Commission, whose register and inspection ratings are public. Whito’s home care research is built on that register, and the companion guide covers the check step by step. Price conversations belong only at registered agencies.
