Metro Rod scores highest of the five UK drainage brands compared, at 6.1 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.
Opinion and analysis. Whito read every brand below by hand on 12 October 2026, using publicly visible activity only. Each channel is scored 0 to 10 against fixed anchors, set out under How we scored, so a score describes what we could see on the day, not the quality of the service. Brands cannot pay to appear or to change a score. Where a figure is not published, we say so.
Drainage firms often believe the work comes from the emergency phone number. The scores say search decides who gets the call: Metro Rod appeared in 8 of 10 UK searches, largely through its franchisees’ local posts.
Reviews and search pull in opposite directions on this board. Drain Doctor holds 4.8 from 9,906 Trustpilot reviews but appeared in none of 10 searches. Lanes appeared in 6 of 10 but holds 3.7 from 948. None of the five publishes a price for unblocking a drain.
3 Flow Drainage scores lowest at 2.6. Customers rate it 4.8 from 526 Trustpilot reviews, but its website is a single phone-only page, it links no social profiles and none of the latest 20 reviews has a reply.

Company verdicts
Metro Rod, 6.1
Metro Rod scores 6.1, the highest of the five. Search scores 10: metrorod.co.uk appeared in 8 of 10 UK searches, often through local franchise posts such as one on drain unblocking in Birmingham. Paid scores 8, with 75 Google ads and 2 Meta ads. Metro Rod was founded in 1983, has over 40 franchisees and has been owned by Franchise Brands plc since March 2017. Its website scores 6, with service pages, an online enquiry form and a commercial client portal, but no prices. Reviews score 5 from 4.3 on 796 Trustpilot reviews, with replies to 4 of the latest 20. That review volume, against Drain Doctor’s 9,906, is its clearest gap.
Lanes, 4.9
Lanes scores 4.9. Search scores 8, with lanesdrainageservices.co.uk appearing in 6 of 10 UK searches. Social scores 6 with five platforms linked, and email scores 4 for an industry newsletter. The homepage claims 4,500+ staff, but states both ’30+ depots’ and ’20 depots’. Lanes acquired the business and certain assets of two UKDN Waterflow companies in November 2015, and its old lanesfordrains.co.uk domain now redirects to the new one. Its website scores 6, with service pages and an enquiry form but no prices. Paid scores 2, with no ads found. Reviews are its clearest gap at 4, from 3.7 on 948 Trustpilot reviews, with replies to 8 of the latest 20.
Drain Doctor, 4.3
Drain Doctor scores 4.3. Reviews score 9, the highest on the board, from 4.8 on 9,906 Trustpilot reviews with replies to 13 of the latest 20. In October 2021 it marked its 1,500th Trustpilot review with 50 locations; its homepage now claims over 60. Paid scores 6, with about 900 Google ads, the most here, and no Meta ads found. Its website scores 6, with service pages and a ‘Book an engineer in 2 minutes’ form, but no prices. Social scores 2, with only Facebook linked, and email scores 0. Drain Doctor is part of Neighbourly. Its clearest gap is search: draindoctor.co.uk appeared in none of 10 UK searches.
Drains24, 3.9
Drains24 scores 3.9. Reviews score 7 from 4.8 on 102 Trustpilot reviews, with replies to 2 of the latest 20. Social scores 6, with Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok linked, although the handles use ‘drains247’ rather than the trading name. Its website scores 6: service pages, about 19 town pages across southern England, a callback form and WhatsApp, and discounts for NHS, military and OAP customers, but no prices or online booking. Paid scores 4, with 1 Google ad. Email scores 0, and drains24.co.uk appeared in none of 10 UK searches. Its clearest gap is that the site shows no legal company name or number.
3 Flow Drainage, 2.6
3 Flow Drainage scores 2.6, the lowest of the five. Reviews score 6, from 4.8 on 526 Trustpilot reviews, but none of the latest 20 has a reply. Paid scores 6, with 10 Google ads in 30 days. Its website scores 4: a single page with a phone number, covering Kent, London, South Essex and Gatwick, with no separate service pages, prices or named accreditations, and a statement that it is insured up to £10 million. Social, email and brand all score 0: no social links, no email capture and no positioning line or named people. 3 Flow Drainage Ltd was incorporated in January 2018. Its clearest gap is turning strong customer reviews into a website that shows them.
What the channels show
Local posts win search
Metro Rod scores 10 on search, appearing in 8 of 10 UK searches, usually through franchisees’ local news and blog posts. Lanes appeared in 6 of 10. Drain Doctor, Drains24 and 3 Flow Drainage appeared in none, even though Drain Doctor has more than 60 locations. In this trade, steady local content has decided search reach, more than size, reviews or ad spend.
Nobody shows a price
All five score between 4 and 6 on website, and none publishes a price for a standard drain unblock or CCTV survey. They rely on phrases such as no call-out fee or a fixed quote on site. A drainage firm that prints a starting price would be doing something none of these five does, and would answer the first question most customers ask on the phone.
Reviews and search pull apart
The two brands strongest in search hold the weakest ratings: Metro Rod 4.3 from 796 and Lanes 3.7 from 948. Drain Doctor, Drains24 and 3 Flow Drainage all hold 4.8 on Trustpilot but appeared in no searches. Good reviews have not translated into search reach here. The firms with strong reviews have not yet written the local pages that search engines reward.
Paid is patchy
Drain Doctor ran about 900 Google ads in 30 days and Metro Rod 75. 3 Flow Drainage ran 10 and Drains24 1, and no ads were found for Lanes. Drain Doctor uses paid to make up for no search reach; Lanes relies on search with no paid support found. Paid and search are doing the same job in different ways across this board.
Key lessons for any drainage business
Write up your local jobs
Metro Rod’s franchisees publish short local posts, such as one on drain unblocking in Birmingham, and the brand appeared in 8 of 10 UK searches. A weekly write-up of a real job, with the town and the fix, is the cheapest search move on this board.
Publish a starting price
None of the five publishes a price for a drain unblock. A clear starting price, with what it includes, answers the first question a customer has and sets you apart from every brand compared here. Say what is included and what would cost extra.
Claim and answer your reviews
3 Flow Drainage holds 4.8 from 526 Trustpilot reviews with no replies on the latest 20. Drain Doctor replies to 13 of its latest 20 and scores 9. Claim your profiles on Trustpilot and Google, then reply to each review in your own words.
Show who you are
Drains24 shows no company name or number on its site, and 3 Flow Drainage names no people. Put your company name, number and the faces of your engineers on the site. It costs nothing, and it gives a customer something to check before they let you into their home.
Use one name everywhere
Drains24 trades as Drains24 but its social handles use ‘drains247’, which costs it a brand point. Use your exact trading name on every profile so customers and search engines connect them to your website, your reviews and the name on your van. It is a ten-minute fix.
Steal this playbook
Five moves from this leaderboard, ranked by return on effort.
- Reply to every review this week. Drain Doctor replies to 13 of its latest 20 and scores 9 on reviews; 3 Flow Drainage replies to none.
- Publish a short post for each job you finish. Metro Rod’s local franchise posts helped it appear in 8 of 10 UK searches.
- Print a starting price for a drain unblock. None of the five brands shows a price, so it is an open way to stand out.
- Add your company name and number to the footer. Drains24 shows neither on its site, which a careful customer will notice.
- Link at least two social profiles under your exact name. 3 Flow Drainage links none and scores 0 on social; Drains24 loses a brand point for its ‘drains247’ handles.

How we scored
Who is on the board. Five UK drainage brands a household or small business is likely to meet for a blocked drain, CCTV survey or repair, spanning models: Lanes (national employed-engineer wastewater group, 4,500+ staff claimed), Metro Rod (national franchise network owned by Franchise Brands plc since 2017), Drain Doctor (national franchise network, part of Neighbourly), 3 Flow Drainage (regional multi-area firm covering Kent, London, South Essex and Gatwick) and Drains24 (regional multi-town firm across southern England). Dyno-Rod is left out because it already appears on our home services board; UKDN Waterflow considered and dropped because it is owned by Lanes. Chosen for relevance and size, not marketing strength. Brands were chosen for relevance and size, not for marketing strength.
- Social: which platforms the brand links to from its own site, and whether we could see recent posting and video.
- Website: 2 for a brochure page, 4 with a contact route on mobile, 6 with a page per service and a one-step enquiry, 8 with prices or ranges and registration numbers shown, 10 with online booking or an instant priced quote.
- Email: visible capture only, as we did not subscribe test inboxes for this edition. 2 for a bare newsletter form, up to 10 for a loyalty or app ecosystem with personal offers.
- SEO: ten UK searches for this trade, run through a standard web search API on 12 October 2026 (not personalised, no location set beyond the town in the query); we counted how many returned the brand’s own site in the top ten results. 0 of 10 scores 2, 1 to 2 scores 4, 3 to 4 scores 6, 5 to 6 scores 8, 7 or more scores 10, plus 1 for a substantial advice library. The searches: blocked drain unblocking service; CCTV drain survey cost UK; blocked drains London; drain unblocking Manchester; drain unblocking Birmingham; blocked drains Leeds; drain unblocking Bristol; blocked drain Glasgow; drain repair cost UK; blocked toilet emergency.
- Paid: the Google Ads Transparency Centre (UK, last 30 days, by domain) and the Meta Ad Library (UK, active ads whose text names the brand, counted by the advertiser page). 2 for nothing found in either, 4 for active in one with fewer than 10 ads, 6 for active in both or 10+ in one, 8 for active in both with 10+ in at least one, 10 for 50+ Google ads and 10+ Meta ads. Paid describes visible activity, not quality. A low paid score is not a fault.
- Reviews: a fixed formula. Rating (4.7+ scores 4, 4.5 to 4.69 scores 3, 4.0 to 4.49 scores 2, 3.5 to 3.99 scores 1) plus volume (10,000+ scores 4, 1,000+ scores 3, 100+ scores 2, 20+ scores 1) plus replies to the latest 20 reviews (half or more scores 2, some scores 1).
- Brand: five checks worth 2 each: the same name and logo everywhere, one clear positioning line, a distinctive asset used for years, three or more independent press mentions in 90 days, and named people or expertise on the site.
These anchors are fixed for this edition, so the five scores can be read against each other. Boards published before October 2026 used scores relative to the other brands on the board, so compare across boards with care.
Common questions
Which drainage brand scores highest on the Whito leaderboard?
Metro Rod scores highest at 6.1 out of 10. Its lead comes from search: metrorod.co.uk appeared in 8 of 10 UK searches, often through franchisees’ local posts. It also ran 75 Google ads in 30 days. Its reviews are modest, at 4.3 from 796 on Trustpilot, and it publishes no prices.
Which drainage brand scores lowest, and why?
3 Flow Drainage scores 2.6. Customers rate it 4.8 from 526 Trustpilot reviews, but its website is a single page with a phone number, it links no social profiles, captures no email and did not appear in any of 10 UK searches. None of its latest 20 reviews has a reply.
How do drainage brands compare on reviews?
Drain Doctor leads with 4.8 from 9,906 Trustpilot reviews and replies to 13 of the latest 20. Drains24 and 3 Flow Drainage also hold 4.8 but on far fewer reviews. Metro Rod holds 4.3 from 796 and Lanes 3.7 from 948, the two weakest ratings, despite being strongest in search.
What can a local drainage firm copy from these brands?
Write a short post for each job, with the town and the fix, as Metro Rod franchisees do. Publish a starting price, which none of the five does. Claim your review profiles and reply to each review. Show your company name and number, and use one trading name on every profile.
Do drainage companies publish prices for unblocking a drain?
None of the five brands compared publishes a price for a standard drain unblock or CCTV survey. They rely on phrases such as no call-out fee or a fixed quote on site. A local firm that shows a clear starting price would be offering customers something none of these brands does.
