This guide explains how drainage work is priced and where its traps are. It quotes no prices, because Whito has not yet collected drainage prices and will not invent them. When Whito runs its drainage price collection, published prices only and dated, it will appear here.
Whose drain is it? The free answer first
In England and Wales, most drains shared between properties, and the sewers they join, belong to the water company, not to you, and blockages in them are the company’s job to clear, typically free. The drain serving only your property inside your boundary is yours. Before paying anyone, this one question, answered with a call to your water company, is routinely worth the whole bill.
What a private job is made of
Three products hide under “drains”: unblocking, jetting or rodding, priced by time; CCTV surveys, a diagnostic product with a report, priced per survey; and repairs, excavation or lining, priced from the survey. The honest sequence is unblock, then survey if it recurs, then repair what the survey shows. The dishonest sequence sells the repair on the doorstep.
The no-call-out-fee trap
“No call-out fee” is the trade’s loudest claim, and it means only that the fee is somewhere else, usually in the first hour’s rate or the minimum charge. The questions that cut through: what is the charge to attend and diagnose, what is included in the first hour, and what is the rate after it. In pounds, before the van moves.
National brand, local van
Much of drainage search is dominated by national brands that subcontract to local operators, like skip brokering. Lawful, and sometimes convenient; also a margin you pay. The same local firm booked direct is often the same van at a different price. Ask who is actually attending.
Insurance and the recurring blockage
Home insurance often covers accidental damage to underground services, and some policies cover drainage investigations; a recurring blockage is the point to check the policy before commissioning a big repair. For any repair quote, a written CCTV survey report with footage is the evidence standard; no survey, no dig.
The checks, in a trade with no register
No licence covers drainage work. Check the company at Companies House under the name on the quote, ask for insurance in writing, and treat the doorstep repair quote without a survey as the red flag it is. Whito’s drainage check guide covers the rest.
