Most UK small businesses know they should be active on social media. The problem is not lack of ideas, it is lack of time. Scheduling posts across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok, tracking what is working, and responding to comments across four different apps eats hours every week.

Social media management tools solve this by putting everything in one dashboard. You schedule posts in advance, see analytics across all platforms, and manage replies without opening each app individually.

We tested the four tools that make the most sense for UK small businesses. Not the enterprise platforms that cost £500/month and need a dedicated social media manager. The ones a business owner, marketing assistant, or sole trader can set up and use in under an hour.

Before You Pick a Tool

If you are posting to fewer than three social platforms and spending less than an hour a week on social media, you probably do not need a paid tool yet. Use the built-in scheduling features on Facebook (Meta Business Suite), LinkedIn, and TikTok. They are free and functional. Come back to this page when your social media is growing enough that managing it across individual platforms feels inefficient.

If you are already spending two or more hours a week on social media across multiple platforms, a scheduling tool will pay for itself in time saved within the first month.

1. Buffer

Buffer is the simplest social media scheduling tool on the market, and that simplicity is its biggest strength. If you want to schedule posts across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, and X (Twitter) without learning a complex dashboard, Buffer is where to start.

The free plan gives you three channels with ten scheduled posts per channel. For a small business just getting started with scheduling, that is genuinely usable. The Essentials plan at £5/month per channel removes the post limit and adds analytics, engagement tools, and a landing page builder.

What is good

The interface is the cleanest of any social media tool. You can learn it in fifteen minutes. The AI Assistant generates post ideas and rewrites captions, which saves time when you are staring at a blank screen. Analytics are straightforward and show you what is working without burying you in data. The free plan is genuinely useful, not just a trial. Buffer also supports direct scheduling to TikTok, which not all competitors offer.

Watch out for

Pricing is per channel, not per user. If you manage Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok, that is £20/month on the Essentials plan. It adds up. The engagement features (replying to comments and messages from within Buffer) are relatively basic compared to Hootsuite or Sprout Social. There is no social listening feature, so you cannot monitor brand mentions or competitor activity.

Best for: Sole traders and micro businesses that want a simple, affordable scheduling tool without complexity. The best starting point for businesses new to social media management tools.

2. Hootsuite

Hootsuite is the longest-running social media management platform and the one most likely to appear in a marketing job description. It is more powerful than Buffer but significantly more expensive and complex. The 2025 pricing overhaul pushed the entry point to £89/month, which puts it firmly in “you need to be serious about social media” territory.

The Professional plan covers one user and ten social accounts. The Team plan at £249/month adds three users and analytics benchmarking. For most UK small businesses, Professional is sufficient.

What is good

The streams view lets you monitor multiple feeds, mentions, and hashtags in one screen. This is genuinely useful if you need to stay on top of conversations happening about your brand or industry. The analytics are the most comprehensive of the four platforms reviewed here, with customisable reports you can export for clients or stakeholders. OwlyWriter AI generates post ideas based on your past top-performing content, which is more useful than generic AI caption generators. Social listening is included from the Professional plan, letting you track brand mentions and competitor activity.

Watch out for

The price. At £89/month minimum, Hootsuite costs more than Buffer, Later, and Sendible combined at their entry tiers. The interface has improved but is still more complex than Buffer or Later. New users often feel overwhelmed by the number of features and settings. The free plan was discontinued in 2023, so there is no way to try it without committing to the trial (which requires a credit card).

Best for: Businesses that are serious about social media as a marketing channel, manage ten or more accounts, or need detailed reporting for clients or stakeholders. Not worth the price for businesses posting a few times a week.

3. Later

Later started as an Instagram-first scheduling tool and still has the strongest visual planning features of any platform. If Instagram or TikTok is your primary marketing channel, Later’s visual calendar and link-in-bio tool (Linkin.bio) give it an edge over Buffer and Hootsuite.

The free plan supports one social set (one profile per platform) with five posts per profile per month. The Starter plan at £16.67/month gives you one social set with 30 posts per profile, plus analytics and the Linkin.bio tool. The Growth plan at £33.33/month adds three social sets and unlimited posts.

What is good

The visual content calendar is the best available. You can drag and drop posts to rearrange your feed layout, preview how your Instagram grid will look before publishing, and plan visually-coherent content across weeks. Linkin.bio turns your Instagram profile link into a mini landing page, which is valuable since Instagram only allows one link in your bio. Best posting time suggestions are based on your actual audience data, not generic advice. Later’s AI caption writer is solid and includes hashtag suggestions.

Watch out for

Later is weaker on platforms other than Instagram. If LinkedIn or X are your primary channels, Buffer or Hootsuite will serve you better. The analytics on the Starter plan are basic. You need the Growth plan (£33.33/month) for detailed performance data. The free plan is very limited (five posts per profile per month), so it functions more as a trial than a genuinely usable free tier.

Best for: Visually-driven businesses (restaurants, salons, fitness, retail, photography) where Instagram and TikTok are the primary marketing channels. The visual planning tools are unmatched.

4. Sendible

Sendible is a UK-founded social media management platform that has built a strong following among marketing agencies and freelancers who manage social media for clients. For small businesses, the main advantage is that it includes features that competitors charge extra for, like a social inbox, content suggestions, and Google Business Profile management.

The Creator plan at £25/month covers one user and six social profiles. The Traction plan at £76/month adds four users, 24 profiles, and client dashboards. For a small business managing their own accounts, the Creator plan is sufficient.

What is good

Google Business Profile scheduling is included, which matters for local businesses. You can schedule Google posts alongside your social media content, something Buffer and Later do not support. The unified social inbox pulls messages and comments from all platforms into one view. Content suggestions pull from RSS feeds and trending content, giving you ideas when you do not know what to post. UK-based support team with responsive chat support during UK business hours. White-label reporting is available on higher plans, useful if you manage social media for other businesses.

Watch out for

The interface is functional but not as clean as Buffer or Later. There is a learning curve in the first week. The mobile app is not as polished as competitors. If you do most of your social media management on your phone, Buffer or Later have better mobile experiences. Six profiles on the Creator plan may not be enough if you manage multiple brands or have separate accounts for different locations.

Best for: Local businesses that rely on Google Business Profile, businesses that manage social media for multiple brands or clients, and anyone who values UK-based customer support and an all-in-one inbox.

The Bottom Line

For most UK small businesses starting out with social media scheduling, Buffer is the best choice. It is the simplest to learn, has a genuinely useful free plan, and costs less than £20/month to manage four channels. You can be scheduling posts within fifteen minutes of signing up.

If Instagram or TikTok is your primary channel and visual planning matters to you, Later is the stronger pick. The visual calendar and Linkin.bio tool are genuine differentiators for image-heavy businesses like restaurants, salons, and retailers.

If you are a local business that relies heavily on Google Business Profile, Sendible is worth the extra cost over Buffer. Being able to schedule Google posts alongside your social media content from one dashboard saves time that adds up.

Hootsuite is the most powerful platform here, but the £89/month price tag means it only makes sense for businesses where social media is a core marketing channel, not an afterthought. If you are posting daily across multiple platforms and need detailed analytics, it justifies the investment. For everyone else, Buffer or Later will do the job at a fraction of the cost.
