GraftinGardeners scores highest of the five UK tree surgery and arboriculture brands compared, at 4.9 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.

Opinion and analysis. Whito read every brand below by hand on 12 October 2026, using publicly visible activity only. Each channel is scored 0 to 10 against fixed anchors, set out under How we scored, so a score describes what we could see on the day, not the quality of the service. Brands cannot pay to appear or to change a score. Where a figure is not published, we say so.

Most tree firms assume size wins work. A Royal Warrant, a national depot network or a council framework should do the selling. On public marketing evidence, it does not.

The highest score of the five goes to a single-city London firm. GraftinGardeners is the only brand here that publishes prices and the only one that appeared in our 10 UK searches, showing up in 4 of them. The four larger brands appeared in none, as lead platforms and directories took the results instead.

Connick Tree Care scores lowest at 3.1. It runs 69 Google ads and shows a named team, but links to no social platforms and has replied to none of its 15 Trustpilot reviews.

Company verdicts

GraftinGardeners, 4.9

GraftinGardeners scores 4.9, the highest of the five. Its website scores 8 because it publishes price ranges in its FAQ (an arborist at £45 to £90 an hour, a three-person team at £600 to £1,500 a day) and shows its company and VAT numbers. Search scores 7: its site came up in 4 of our 10 UK searches, backed by a blog whose latest post was dated 9 October 2026. It links to six social platforms and ran 2 Google ads in the last 30 days. Reviews score 3, from a Trustpilot rating of 4.4 across 39 reviews with no company replies in the latest 20. Email scores 0, because the only capture point is the quote form. The clearest gap is follow-up: no newsletter and no review replies.

Glendale, 3.7

Glendale scores 3.7. It is a national grounds contractor with an arboriculture arm, and in April 2026 Lewes District and Eastbourne Borough councils gave it a five-year grounds maintenance contract. Paid scores 6, with 10 Google ads in the last 30 days. Social scores 6 from four linked platforms. The website scores 6: it lists its arboriculture services and has a ‘Book a site survey’ page, but no prices. Email scores 2 for a generic newsletter sign-up. Its site did not appear in any of the 10 searches. Reviews score 0, from a Trustpilot rating of 2.5 across 12 reviews with no replies. That profile is the clearest gap, especially next to the homepage’s Pro Landscaper 2025 awards.

Gristwood & Toms (Nurture Group), 3.4

Gristwood & Toms scores 3.4. The firm was founded in 1974 and bought by Nurture Group in May 2024, when it had 153 staff, 13 depots and over £20m turnover. Its arboriculture pages now sit on the Nurture website. They score 6 for website: a page per service, a freephone number and an enquiry form, but no prices. Email scores 4, because the enquiry form offers an opt-in for ‘seasonal updates and compliance insights’. Social scores 6, though the linked accounts belong to Nurture. Reviews score 2, from a group-wide Trustpilot rating of 2.6 across 5 reviews, with 3 of the latest 4 answered. There were no Google ads in the last 30 days. The clearest gap is brand: a 50-year-old name with no front door of its own.

Bartlett Tree Experts, 3.3

Bartlett Tree Experts scores 3.3. Its UK credentials are strong. It holds a Royal Warrant as tree surgeons, bought Derbyshire firm Canopy Tree Services in June 2024, has 14 offices across the UK and Ireland, and opened a 50-acre research arboretum near Reading on 16 May 2026. Paid scores 4, with 6 Google ads in the last 30 days. Social scores 6, although the linked accounts are global. The website scores 4: the homepage shows a Stamford, Connecticut office and we found no UK office page. Email scores 2 for a newsletter link. Reviews score 1, from a Trustpilot rating of 3.7 across 8 reviews. The clearest gap is that a UK homeowner lands on a US-facing site.

Connick Tree Care, 3.1

Connick Tree Care scores 3.1, the lowest of the five. It is employee-owned and covers seven South East areas from Reigate, and its homepage shows a Pro Landscaper Arboriculture Business Winner 2026 badge. Paid scores 6: it ran 69 Google ads in the last 30 days, the most on this board. The website scores 6, with a page per service, regional contact pages and a quote form, but no prices. Brand scores 4, helped by a Meet the Team page that names the chairman, managing director and consultants. Email scores 2. Its site did not appear in any of the 10 searches. Reviews score 2, from a Trustpilot rating of 4.2 across 15 reviews with no replies. The clearest gap is social: no platforms are linked at all.

What the channels show

Search goes to the platforms

In 10 UK searches, including ‘tree surgeon’ in five cities, the results were mostly lead platforms and directories. Only GraftinGardeners appeared, in 4 of the 10, and the other four brands scored the minimum of 2. The searches it appeared in were questions: costs, crown reduction, BS5837 surveys. A firm that answers those questions on its own site can get found without being large.

One brand publishes prices

GraftinGardeners is the only one of the five to publish prices, with hourly, daily and team rates in its FAQ. It is also the only brand to score 8 for website. The others all route customers to a quote form or a survey booking. That works for council contracts. It does less for a homeowner comparing three quotes. Even a rough range filters out mismatched enquiries and saves a site visit.

Reviews are thin and mostly unanswered

The largest Trustpilot profile here has 39 reviews. Two brands sit below 3 (Glendale on 2.5, the Nurture group profile on 2.6). Only the Nurture profile replies, answering 3 of its latest 4 reviews. No brand scored above 3 for reviews, so a steady flow of answered reviews would set a local firm apart quickly. Replies also show future customers how a firm handles a complaint.

Paid search is uneven

Connick ran 69 Google ads in the last 30 days and Glendale 10. Bartlett ran 6, GraftinGardeners 2 and the Nurture domain none. No brand had active Meta ads naming it. Paid spend does not line up with the averages: the brand with the most ads scores lowest overall, because it has gaps in social and reviews. Ads buy clicks, but the other channels decide whether those clicks turn into calls.

Key lessons for any tree surgery or arboriculture business

Publish a price range

GraftinGardeners lists rates per hour, per day and per team, and it is the only one of the five to score 8 for website. A range does not commit you to a quote. It tells a homeowner you are in their budget before they ring.

Answer seasonal questions on your site

The searches GraftinGardeners appeared in were questions about cost, crown reduction and surveys. Its latest blog post, dated 9 October 2026, asks which months you cannot cut trees. Write short, plain answers to the questions customers ask you on site.

Name your arborists

Connick’s Meet the Team page names the chairman, managing director, regional managers and consultants, which helped it pass the named-people check. Most of the larger brands name nobody. A photo, a name and a qualification costs nothing and builds trust.

Claim and reply to your reviews

Glendale’s Trustpilot profile shows 2.5 from 12 reviews with no replies. No brand here scored above 3 for reviews. Ask every finished job for a review on one platform and reply to each one, good or bad. Replies to poor reviews matter most, because they show how you put things right.

Link your social accounts from your site

Connick links to no social platforms and scores 0 for social. Four of the five link to between three and six platforms. If you post finished jobs on Facebook or Instagram, put the links in your website footer. It costs nothing and lets customers see recent work before they call.

Steal this playbook

Five moves from this leaderboard, ranked by return on effort.

  1. Add a price range page. GraftinGardeners is the only brand publishing rates and the only one scoring 8 for website.
  2. Reply to every review. Four of the five brands had no replies in their latest Trustpilot reviews, so this is an easy way to stand out.
  3. Write one answer page a month. The only brand that appeared in search did so on cost and survey questions.
  4. Put a name and qualification on your about page. Connick and GraftinGardeners passed the people check, and the others did not.
  5. Link your socials and add a simple email sign-up. Social and email were the weakest channels across the board, with two brands scoring 0.

How we scored

Who is on the board. Five UK tree-care brands with multi-region presence that a homeowner, estate manager or council is likely to meet, spanning different models: an international premium specialist (Bartlett Tree Experts, 14 UK and Ireland offices), a national group-owned commercial arborist (Gristwood & Toms, part of Nurture Group, 13 depots at acquisition), an employee-owned regional multi-site firm (Connick Tree Care, seven South East counties), a London online-first domestic specialist (GraftinGardeners) and a national grounds contractor with an arboriculture arm (Glendale). Chosen for relevance and size, not marketing strength. No true national domestic tree surgery franchise could be verified, which is itself a finding. All five checked at Companies House. Arboricultural Association Approved Contractor status is claimed on the Nurture and Connick sites and was not independently verified. Brands were chosen for relevance and size, not for marketing strength.

  • Social: which platforms the brand links to from its own site, and whether we could see recent posting and video.
  • Website: 2 for a brochure page, 4 with a contact route on mobile, 6 with a page per service and a one-step enquiry, 8 with prices or ranges and registration numbers shown, 10 with online booking or an instant priced quote.
  • Email: visible capture only, as we did not subscribe test inboxes for this edition. 2 for a bare newsletter form, up to 10 for a loyalty or app ecosystem with personal offers.
  • SEO: ten UK searches for this trade, run through a standard web search API on 12 October 2026 (not personalised, no location set beyond the town in the query); we counted how many returned the brand’s own site in the top ten results. 0 of 10 scores 2, 1 to 2 scores 4, 3 to 4 scores 6, 5 to 6 scores 8, 7 or more scores 10, plus 1 for a substantial advice library. The searches: tree surgeons near me UK; tree surgery cost UK; tree removal service UK; crown reduction tree surgery; BS5837 tree survey company; tree surgeon London; tree surgeon Manchester; tree surgeon Bristol; tree surgeon Birmingham; tree surgeon Leeds.
  • Paid: the Google Ads Transparency Centre (UK, last 30 days, by domain) and the Meta Ad Library (UK, active ads whose text names the brand, counted by the advertiser page). 2 for nothing found in either, 4 for active in one with fewer than 10 ads, 6 for active in both or 10+ in one, 8 for active in both with 10+ in at least one, 10 for 50+ Google ads and 10+ Meta ads. Paid describes visible activity, not quality. A low paid score is not a fault.
  • Reviews: a fixed formula. Rating (4.7+ scores 4, 4.5 to 4.69 scores 3, 4.0 to 4.49 scores 2, 3.5 to 3.99 scores 1) plus volume (10,000+ scores 4, 1,000+ scores 3, 100+ scores 2, 20+ scores 1) plus replies to the latest 20 reviews (half or more scores 2, some scores 1).
  • Brand: five checks worth 2 each: the same name and logo everywhere, one clear positioning line, a distinctive asset used for years, three or more independent press mentions in 90 days, and named people or expertise on the site.

These anchors are fixed for this edition, so the five scores can be read against each other. Boards published before October 2026 used scores relative to the other brands on the board, so compare across boards with care.

Common questions

Which tree surgery brand scores highest on the Whito leaderboard?

GraftinGardeners scores highest of the five UK tree surgery and arboriculture brands compared, at 4.9 out of 10. It publishes price ranges, shows its company and VAT numbers, and was the only brand whose site appeared in our 10 UK searches, appearing in 4. The score measures public marketing evidence, not the quality of the tree work.

Which brand scores lowest, and why?

Connick Tree Care scores 3.1. It ran 69 Google ads in the last 30 days and names its team, but it links to no social platforms, has no email sign-up beyond a client log-in, did not appear in any of our searches, and has not replied to any of its 15 Trustpilot reviews.

How do tree surgery brands perform on reviews?

Reviews are thin. The largest Trustpilot profile on this board has 39 reviews (GraftinGardeners, 4.4). Glendale shows 2.5 from 12 and the Nurture group profile 2.6 from 5. Only the Nurture profile replies to reviews, answering 3 of its latest 4. No brand scored above 3 out of 10 for reviews.

What can a local tree surgeon copy from these brands?

Publish a price range per hour, per day and per team, as GraftinGardeners does. Write plain answers to seasonal questions such as when you can cut trees. Name your arborists and their qualifications, as Connick does. Link your social accounts from your website and reply to every review on one platform.

Why do big tree surgery firms rarely appear in local searches?

In our 10 UK searches, results were mostly lead platforms and directories. The larger brands here sell to councils and estates, so their sites focus on accreditations and contracts rather than costs and homeowner questions. The one brand that answered cost and survey questions on its own site was the one that appeared.
