HSS Hire scores highest of the five UK scaffolding brands compared, at 4.4 out of 10 on the Whito leaderboard.
Opinion and analysis. Whito read every brand below by hand on 12 October 2026, using publicly visible activity only. Each channel is scored 0 to 10 against fixed anchors, set out under How we scored, so a score describes what we could see on the day, not the quality of the service. Brands cannot pay to appear or to change a score. Where a figure is not published, we say so.
Scaffolding is sold on relationships and tenders, so most firms treat marketing as optional. The scores agree: no brand on this board reaches 5 out of 10, and the five brands average under 3.
The two national hire chains lead, HSS Hire at 4.4 and Speedy Hire at 4.3, because they serve trade and DIY customers online with accounts and checkout. The three scaffolding contractors score between 1.4 and 2.4, with no reviews, no email capture and no ads found.
TRAD (Altrad) scores lowest at 1.4. Its scaffolding page links to no social accounts, lists only an 0845 phone number and shows no awards newer than 2018.

Company verdicts
HSS Hire, 4.4
HSS Hire scores 4.4, the highest of the five. It hires access towers and platforms nationally. Social scores 6, with YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, X and LinkedIn linked. The website (6) has hire buttons, an account to manage orders and a branch finder, but no prices shown. Paid scores 6, with about 200 Google ads and no Meta ads naming the brand. Reviews score 5: 3.7 from 21,604 Trustpilot reviews, the largest base on the board, with no reply on any of the latest 20. It did not appear in our ten searches. The clearest gap is naming: its accounts are split across HSS, HSS DIY and HSS ProService, so it fails the same-name check.
Speedy Hire, 4.3
Speedy Hire scores 4.3. The national hire chain offers click and collect from more than 200 stores and over 3,500 product lines. Its website scores 7, the highest on the board, with an online basket, checkout and separate trade and DIY modes, though no hire prices on the homepage. Social scores 6 across five platforms. Reviews score 5: 2.8 from 2,250 on Trustpilot, but with replies on 15 of the latest 20. Email is account sign-up only (4). It ran no Google or Meta ads we could find and did not appear in our ten searches. The clearest gap is wording: the homepage files access kit under ‘Working at Height’ and never says scaffolding.
BrandSafway (Brand Access Solutions UK), 2.4
BrandSafway scores 2.4. The group reports about 340 locations in 25 countries, and its UK business works for contractors and industry. Social scores 6 through the global Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram accounts, and its line ‘At Work For You®’ is clear. The rest is thin for a UK buyer. The website scores 3 because the global site we could read lists a US phone number and Atlanta headquarters, with no UK page found. It has no Trustpilot profile, no email capture, no ads found and no appearance in our ten searches. The clearest gap is a UK front door: a British customer lands on a US contact page.
Turner Access, 2.1
Turner Access scores 2.1. The Glasgow contract scaffolder, part of the Turner Group for over 35 years, covers the Central Belt, Fife, Perth and Dundee. It is the only contractor on the board to name its people, from its Finance Director, Laura Crolla, to its Operations Manager, Billy Fergus, which lifts brand to 4. The website (5) lists services, a phone number and an email address, but no form or prices. Social scores 2: Instagram posts appear on the site, but no profile links are given. It has no Trustpilot profile, no email capture, no ads found and no presence in our ten searches. The clearest gap is linked social profiles.
TRAD (Altrad), 1.4
TRAD (Altrad) scores 1.4, the lowest of the five. Founded in 1971 and part of the Altrad Group since September 2013, it describes itself as one of the largest scaffolding groups in the UK, with 80% repeat business. That repeat rate may explain the light marketing. The scaffolding page (4) lists services and offers a brochure, with an 0845 number as the only contact. It links to no social accounts, collects no email, has no Trustpilot profile, ran no ads we found and did not appear in our ten searches. Brand scores 2 for naming its Group CEO, Des Moore. The clearest gap is freshness: the newest awards shown are from 2017 and 2018.
What the channels show
Hire chains lead, contractors trail
HSS Hire and Speedy Hire score 4.4 and 4.3 because they sell to trade and DIY customers online, with accounts, checkout and branch finders. The three scaffolding contractors score 2.4 or below. They win work through tenders and repeat clients, so they publish little. That leaves the homeowner and small builder market open to any local scaffolder who shows up online.
No one publishes a price
None of the five shows a scaffolding or tower hire price on the pages read. Speedy Hire and HSS Hire have online checkout but no prices on the homepage. The three contractors ask for a call or an email before anything else. A homeowner planning roof, render or chimney work wants to know roughly what scaffolding costs, and for how long, before they pick up the phone.
Reviews are scarce and mixed
Only the hire chains have Trustpilot profiles. HSS Hire holds 3.7 from 21,604 reviews, the largest base here, with no replies on the latest 20. Speedy Hire holds 2.8 from 2,250 but replies to 15 of 20. The three contractors have no profile at all. A buyer comparing scaffolders has almost nothing public to go on, which makes even a small set of genuine reviews valuable.
Search is untouched
Across ten UK scaffolding searches, none of the five brands appeared in the top ten, and every brand scores 2 on SEO. None keeps a guides library that we could find. This is the clearest opening on the board: a local scaffolder with a plain page per town, a guide to costs and a page on what a scaffold licence involves faces no national brand competition in these results.
Key lessons for any scaffolding business
Say ‘scaffolding’ plainly
Speedy Hire files access kit under ‘Working at Height’ and HSS Hire under ‘Access Towers & Platforms’. Neither homepage uses the word scaffolding. Put the words your customers type, such as scaffolding hire, scaffold tower and scaffolding for roof work, in your page titles and headings.
Publish a guide price
None of the five brands shows a price. Give a range for a common job, such as a front elevation on a two-storey house, and say what changes it: height, access, duration and licences. It answers the first question homeowners ask.
Name the people responsible for safety
Turner Access names its Finance Director, Operations Manager, Contracts Manager and supervisors. It is the only contractor here to pass the named people check. Buyers want to know who signs off a scaffold, so show your supervisors, their training cards and how long they have worked with you.
Collect reviews from every domestic job
The three contractors have no Trustpilot profile. A local scaffolder with a few dozen genuine reviews would have more public proof than any of them. Ask at handover, reply to each review personally and link the profile from your homepage so buyers can check it.
Use a local number and keep the site current
TRAD lists only an 0845 number and shows awards from 2017 and 2018. A local geographic number, a short contact form and one recent job with photos posted each month tell buyers the business is active, local and easy to reach.
Steal this playbook
Five moves from this leaderboard, ranked by return on effort.
- Write one page per town you cover. None of the five brands appeared in our ten scaffolding searches, so local pages face no national competition.
- Use the word scaffolding in headings. Speedy Hire and HSS Hire do not, leaving the plain term open.
- Start collecting reviews. Three of five brands have no Trustpilot profile, so a few dozen reviews set you apart.
- Publish a guide price for a typical house job. No brand on the board shows any price.
- Name your supervisors and managers. Turner Access is the only contractor naming its people, which lifts its brand score to 4.

How we scored
Who is on the board. Scaffolding is mainly B2B; this board scores five scaffolding and access brands that UK contractors and some homeowners are likely to meet, chosen for scale not marketing strength: two national scaffolding groups (BrandSafway’s UK operation, trading as Brand Access Solutions; TRAD, part of Altrad), a multi-region contract scaffolder (Turner Access, Central Scotland) and the two national tool-hire chains that rent access towers to trade and DIY customers (Speedy Hire, HSS). Brands were chosen for relevance and size, not for marketing strength.
- Social: which platforms the brand links to from its own site, and whether we could see recent posting and video.
- Website: 2 for a brochure page, 4 with a contact route on mobile, 6 with a page per service and a one-step enquiry, 8 with prices or ranges and registration numbers shown, 10 with online booking or an instant priced quote.
- Email: visible capture only, as we did not subscribe test inboxes for this edition. 2 for a bare newsletter form, up to 10 for a loyalty or app ecosystem with personal offers.
- SEO: ten UK searches for this trade, run through a standard web search API on 12 October 2026 (not personalised, no location set beyond the town in the query); we counted how many returned the brand’s own site in the top ten results. 0 of 10 scores 2, 1 to 2 scores 4, 3 to 4 scores 6, 5 to 6 scores 8, 7 or more scores 10, plus 1 for a substantial advice library. The searches: scaffolding hire UK; scaffold tower hire; scaffolding contractors UK; scaffolding cost for house UK; NASC scaffolding contractor; scaffolding London; scaffolding Manchester; scaffolding Glasgow; scaffolding Birmingham; scaffolding Leeds.
- Paid: the Google Ads Transparency Centre (UK, last 30 days, by domain) and the Meta Ad Library (UK, active ads whose text names the brand, counted by the advertiser page). 2 for nothing found in either, 4 for active in one with fewer than 10 ads, 6 for active in both or 10+ in one, 8 for active in both with 10+ in at least one, 10 for 50+ Google ads and 10+ Meta ads. Paid describes visible activity, not quality. A low paid score is not a fault.
- Reviews: a fixed formula. Rating (4.7+ scores 4, 4.5 to 4.69 scores 3, 4.0 to 4.49 scores 2, 3.5 to 3.99 scores 1) plus volume (10,000+ scores 4, 1,000+ scores 3, 100+ scores 2, 20+ scores 1) plus replies to the latest 20 reviews (half or more scores 2, some scores 1).
- Brand: five checks worth 2 each: the same name and logo everywhere, one clear positioning line, a distinctive asset used for years, three or more independent press mentions in 90 days, and named people or expertise on the site.
These anchors are fixed for this edition, so the five scores can be read against each other. Boards published before October 2026 used scores relative to the other brands on the board, so compare across boards with care.
Common questions
Which scaffolding brand scores highest on the Whito leaderboard?
HSS Hire scores highest of the five UK scaffolding and access brands compared, at 4.4 out of 10, just ahead of Speedy Hire at 4.3. Both are national hire chains with online accounts and checkout. The score measures visible marketing across seven channels, not the safety or quality of any scaffold.
Which scaffolding brand scores lowest?
TRAD (Altrad) scores 1.4 out of 10, the lowest of the five. Its scaffolding page links to no social accounts, lists only an 0845 phone number, collects no email and shows no awards newer than 2018. It says 80% of its work is repeat business, which may explain the light marketing.
How do scaffolding brands compare on reviews?
Only the two hire chains have Trustpilot profiles. HSS Hire holds 3.7 from 21,604 reviews with no replies on the latest 20, and Speedy Hire 2.8 from 2,250 with replies on 15 of 20. BrandSafway, Turner Access and TRAD have no Trustpilot profile.
What can a local scaffolder copy from these brands?
Copy Turner Access by naming your managers and supervisors, and copy the hire chains by making it easy to enquire online. Then go further than all five: publish a guide price, collect reviews from domestic jobs and use the word scaffolding plainly in your page headings.
Why is scaffolding marketing weaker than other trades?
Most scaffolding work is won through tenders and repeat clients, so contractors invest little in public marketing. On this board the three contractors score between 1.4 and 2.4, and none of the five brands appeared in our ten UK scaffolding searches. That gap is an opening for local firms serving homeowners and small builders.
