Read: 3 October 2026. 197 heating engineer websites and 120 dental practice websites across eight UK towns. Every price taken from the firm’s own site on that day, nothing from directories. Same towns and rules as our emergency call-out checks of 2 October 2026.

Most people book a boiler service once a year and a dental check-up twice. Both are routine, repeat jobs. If any price should be written down in advance, it is these.

On 3 October 2026 we checked 197 heating engineer websites across eight UK towns. 146 of 197 published no boiler service price at all. 51 did, from £50 to £129, and 30 of those 51 did not say whether VAT was included. Dental practices published more often where we looked: of 120 practice websites checked, 83 published a private check-up fee, from £33 to £102. But 32 of those 83 fees came from branches of four national groups.

What we checked

Two jobs, each defined once.

  • Boiler service: the annual service of one domestic gas boiler. A “from” price is not a fixed price, and we recorded which it is. Monthly cover plans, repair rates and call-out fees do not count.
  • Dental check-up: a private routine examination for an adult at a general practice. NHS charges are set by government and are not the subject. Monthly membership plans, cosmetic consultations and child fees do not count. A fee that bundles X-rays is recorded and labelled.

Towns: Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester and Norwich. A firm counts as checked only if we opened its own website looking for a price. Every price was fetched twice from the same page, and every recorded figure was machine-checked against the saved page text before this page was written.

Boiler service: what is published, town by town

TownWebsites checkedPublish a priceNo price on sitePrices published

Manchester241113£60 to £105
Norwich21516£70 to £96
All towns19751146£50 to £129

Of the 51 published prices, 27 are fixed and 24 are “from” prices. The figures mix VAT bases: 8 include VAT, 12 exclude it and 30 do not say, so the range is what is written down, not a like-for-like comparison. We show no median for this edition for that reason.

Belfast and Glasgow stand out. 2 of 26 Belfast heating websites and 3 of 28 in Glasgow published a boiler service price. The rest showed no service price on the pages we opened.

Dental check-up: what is published, town by town

TownWebsites checkedPublish a check-up feeNo fee on siteFees published

Manchester15123£39.99 to £83
Norwich15105£49 to £90

Read the dental “no fee” column with care. We stopped collecting in a town once 15 practices had published a fee, which happened in Cardiff and Leeds, and practice fee lists are easy to search for. So the dental figures show what is published where we looked. They are not a rate for the whole market, and they should not be set against the boiler figures.

Of the 83 published fees, 61 are fixed and 22 are “from” fees. The units differ: some are a routine exam for an existing patient, some a new-patient exam, some include X-rays. No dental page stated VAT.

Four groups set two in five of the published fees

32 of the 83 fees came from branches of four national groups: Bupa Dental Care (13), Rodericks (12), mydentist (4) and Together Dental (3). Rodericks, mydentist and Together Dental mostly repeat one fee across their branches in the same town, so a patient comparing local practices online is often comparing one price list several times. Bupa fees varied by branch, from £65 to £102. The other 51 fees came from practices outside those four groups.

Five jobs, same towns, same rules

Boiler service and dental check-ups are the fourth and fifth jobs we have checked on the same eight towns and the same rules. The share of websites with no price at all:

A boiler service is a planned job, booked weeks ahead, the same every year. It is the easiest price in heating to write down. Three in four heating websites we checked still did not.

Before you book: what to ask

Boiler service. Ask for the price for one boiler, whether it includes VAT, whether parts or a flue gas analysis cost extra, and whether a landlord gas safety certificate is included if you need one. Check the engineer on the Gas Safe Register and ask to see their ID card.

Dental check-up. Ask whether the fee is for a new or an existing patient, whether X-rays are included, and whether a membership plan is required to get that fee.

If you run one of these firms

This is Start stage work, and it costs nothing. If you service boilers, a fixed price for one boiler, with the VAT treatment stated, puts you in the minority of 51 out of 197 sites we checked. In Belfast and Glasgow it would make you one of a handful. Write it on your own site as plain text, not in an image, so people and AI engines can both read it.

If you run a dental practice, the gap is clarity rather than absence. Say whether the fee is for new or existing patients and what it includes. Not sure where your own site stands? The free Visibility Check takes about twenty seconds and needs no email.

The register check

We matched each firm that published a price against Companies House, conservatively: an ambiguous name is not a match. Of the 51 heating firms, 24 matched a company unambiguously, 24 did not, and 3 in Glasgow were not checked before our collection allowance ran out. One matched company carries an active proposal to strike off. Of the 83 dental fees, 42 matched a company and 5 were not checked. An unmatched firm is not an unregistered one: sole traders have no company to match, and many firms trade under a different name. A match is a register fact, not a quality judgement.

What this does not prove

  • A published price is not the invoiced price. Parts, extra appliances, X-rays and treatment are charged on top.
  • This is a sample of firms found through open web search and, for names only, public directories. It is not a census of any town.
  • Pages change. Every figure carries its retrieval date, 3 October 2026, and may be wrong a week later.
  • The dental “no fee” count is shaped by where we stopped collecting and is not a market rate.
  • Firms on the edge of a town were counted only where their own site said they serve it.
  • Saved evidence pages are text renderings returned by our fetch tool, not raw HTML archives.

How we did it

Collection date 3 October 2026. For each town and job we searched openly for firms, opened their own websites, and recorded a price only from a page we opened, together with the exact wording it came from. Prices shown on directories, comparison sites and lead platforms were ignored. Each price was fetched twice; where the two disagreed, nothing was recorded. Per job and town we stopped at 15 published prices or about 25 checked sites, whichever came first. Firms with no published price were logged as checked. Nothing is ranked, and no firm is named as cheapest or best.

The data behind this page

The firm-level file covers every firm that published a price: URL, price, unit, fixed or from, VAT wording, the verbatim sentence, retrieval date and Companies House fields, plus every checked site with no price. Ask for it through Whito Data and we will quote a fixed price in writing. Nobody can pay to be added to a study, removed from one or moved within one. How Whito makes money.
