Most business owners split their marketing into two boxes. There is “the website”, which is search. And there is “social”, which is Instagram, TikTok, X or YouTube. Two boxes, two mental models, two sets of excuses.

That split was always wrong. Your social posts have been showing up in Google results for years. Type a niche business question into Google and you will often get a TikTok, a YouTube clip or an Instagram post sitting in the results. That traffic was real. You just had no way to count it.

On 7 July 2026, Google closed part of that gap.

What actually changed

Google announced a new Search Console property type called platform properties. You can verify an Instagram, TikTok, X or YouTube account inside Search Console and see how that account’s content performs on Google Search and Discover.

ReportWhat it shows you
PerformanceTotal clicks and impressions, plus which specific posts and queries drive the most traffic. Exportable.
InsightsRecent traffic trends, your top-performing posts, and how people discover your account on Google.
AchievementsMilestones, such as passing a new threshold for total clicks from Google Search in the last 28 days.

Google says the property type is rolling out gradually over the following weeks, so it may not be in your account yet. It is free, like the rest of Search Console.

The line in Google’s announcement that matters most for smaller businesses: it is aimed at site owners and creators “even those without their own website”.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Here is the mistake. Most owners assume that if a channel is not sending clicks to the website, it is not working. So they judge social by likes, because likes are the only number they can see.

Likes are a vanity metric. Search impressions are not. A search impression means somebody typed a question and Google decided your content answered it.

Until now, if a plumber’s TikTok about a frozen condensate pipe was quietly pulling in search traffic every January, that plumber had no idea. The data lived inside Google, not inside TikTok analytics. Now it is visible, with the actual search queries attached.

Those queries are the valuable part. They tell you the words real customers use when they have the problem you fix. That is worth more than the traffic number itself, because you can then use those words on your service pages, your pricing page and your Google Business Profile.

The trap to avoid

Do not read this as permission to abandon your website.

This is a measurement upgrade, not a new channel. Nothing about your visibility changed on 7 July. Only your ability to see it changed. If your social posts were not being surfaced by Google before, connecting Search Console will not make them start.

And a rented account is still a rented account. Google giving you a report on your TikTok performance does not mean you own that audience. Your website, your email list and your customer records are still the only assets you control.

Structure before scale. A dashboard is not a strategy.

What to do this week

Start

Check whether platform properties has reached your Search Console. Open Search Console, click the property dropdown, choose Add property, and see whether Instagram, TikTok, X or YouTube appears. If it does not, check again in a fortnight.

Build

Once connected, leave it for four weeks, then read the Performance report by query, not by post. Write down every search term that surprised you. Those are customer words you did not know you had.

Scale

Take the top ten queries and check whether your website answers them properly. If a TikTok ranks for “how much does a boiler service cost UK” and your own pricing page does not, that is a gap you can close in an afternoon.

The takeaway

You cannot fix what you cannot measure, and for years the overlap between search and social was unmeasurable for anyone without an agency budget. That excuse has gone.

Connect it, wait a month, then read the queries. The traffic number is interesting. The words your customers actually type are the thing that makes you money.
