Here is an uncomfortable number. In 2026, fewer than one in three Google searches still sends a click to a website. The rest end right there on the results page, answered by a snippet, a map, or an AI summary. So you can win the top spot and still watch the traffic never arrive.
That is the shift most UK business owners have not caught up with yet. They are still measuring success by where they rank. The game has quietly moved.
What actually happened
Two things collided. First, Google’s AI Overviews now sit above the normal results on a large share of searches. Second, when one of those AI answers appears, the click-through rate for the number one organic result drops by up to 58%, according to an Ahrefs study of 300,000 keywords. Seer Interactive measured organic click-through on AI Overview queries falling 61%. A separate controlled experiment put the drop at 38%.
The exact figure depends on who is counting. The direction does not. People are getting their answer without leaving the search page.
There is a small mercy for UK businesses. Chartbeat’s data shows Google traffic to publishers is down 17% across Europe, against 38% in the US. We are being hit slower. Slower is not the same as spared.
Why this matters for a small business
If your marketing plan rests on “get to page one and the phone rings,” that plan is leaking. You can hold the top position on a term and still lose most of the clicks to a box that answers the question for you.
The mistake is treating this as an SEO problem to out-optimise. It is not. It is a visibility problem. The question is no longer only “do I rank.” It is “am I the answer the AI gives, and does anyone recognise my name when they see it.”
What to do about it
You do not need a big budget. You need to fix the structure first, then build on it. This maps to how we think at Whito: Start, Build, Scale.
Start: be quotable. AI answers pull from pages that state things plainly. Put clear facts on your site. Your prices, your service areas, your opening hours, straight answers to the questions customers actually ask. Vague brochure copy gives the AI nothing to lift.
Build: earn the mention. Being cited inside an AI Overview is worth having. Brands that get cited see roughly 35% more organic clicks, not fewer. Citations come from being referenced elsewhere: local press, supplier pages, directories, real reviews. That off-site trust is what teaches the AI you exist.
Scale: stop relying on one front door. If every enquiry depends on Google sending a click, you are one algorithm change from a quiet month. Build an email list. Keep your Google Business Profile current. Show up where under-35s now search for products and local services, which increasingly means TikTok and Reddit, not just Google.
The takeaway
Ranking number one used to be the finish line. Now it is the starting line. The businesses that win the next two years will not be the ones chasing position. They will be the ones clear enough to be quoted, trusted enough to be cited, and sensible enough not to depend on a single search box for every customer.
