Every AI website builder demo shows the same thing: describe your business, wait two minutes, site appears. Impressive.
None of them show the other demo. The one where, two years later, prices have risen, or the platform has pivoted, or you have outgrown it, and you try to take your website somewhere else.
So in July 2026 we ran that test on paper for the platforms UK businesses actually consider. Not “which AI builds the prettiest site”. Simply: can you leave with what you built?

One column tells you everything. The AI is the shop window. The lock-in is the business model.
The mistake
Business owners compare AI builders on how good the first two minutes are. The platforms know this, which is why the first two minutes are superb and the renewal email arrives in month thirteen.
What you are choosing, underneath the software, is a landlord.
The principle
Never build your main business asset on land you rent, unless you know the exit cost and have decided to accept it.
Renting can be a fine decision. Plenty of businesses rent premises. But nobody signs a lease without reading the break clause, and that is precisely what clicking “generate my website” is: signing without reading.
There is a supporting data point from our own research. This month we examined 24 established UK trade and professional websites, firms ranking and winning work in their towns. Fifteen run WordPress, seven are custom-built or similar, two use Squarespace. Not one runs on Wix or an AI builder. The businesses that have been at this longest sit, almost without exception, on platforms they own.
What to do at each stage
Start. If you have no site and no budget, an AI builder is a legitimate way to get a clear, live shop window this week, and clarity beats polish at this stage. But take out two insurance policies first. One: register your domain yourself, at an independent registrar, in an account you control. If you own the domain, you own the front door, and you can point it at a new site later without losing your Google history, your printed vans or your email address. Two: keep a copy of your content (the words, the photos, the prices) in your own documents as well as in the builder. Then leaving means a rebuild rather than a restart.
Build. Once the website produces real enquiries, the rent-vs-own maths flips. You are now improving an asset every month, and every improvement made inside a walled garden is equity you are handing the landlord. This is the point to move to something you own, almost always WordPress, and to treat the move as buying your premises.
Scale. Ownership stops being enough; control is the game. Page-level testing, proper tracking, fast hosting you choose yourself. No builder, AI or otherwise, belongs in this conversation.
The two-minute question to ask before any platform
Ask the sales chat, or search the help docs, for one sentence: “How do I export my full site to another host?”
If the answer is a straight yes with instructions, proceed. If it is a paragraph about downloading your images, you have your answer. However quick the move-in was, it is the move-out terms that decide what your years of work are worth.

AI has made starting a website absurdly fast, and leaving one exactly as hard as the platform wants it to be.
Use AI builders for what they are: a quick tenancy while you prove the business. Own your domain from day one, keep your content, and know your break clause before you need it.
