Sustainable web design has a reputation problem. It sounds like something you do for the awards page, not the bank account.

So here is the finding that should change your mind. In July 2026 we measured 24 real UK business websites and estimated their emissions using the industry-standard Sustainable Web Design model. Two of them are pest control firms in Sheffield. Direct competitors.

One delivers its homepage in 187 kilobytes. Estimated emissions: 0.07g of CO2 per visit.

The other delivers 8.3 megabytes. Estimated emissions: 2.92g per visit. Forty-four times more.

The bit that matters commercially: the clean site loads in under 2 seconds. The heavy one takes nearly 4 on fast broadband, and longer on a phone. The greener website is also the one that gets its phone number in front of a customer first.

The mistake

Businesses treat “green website” as a separate project. A badge to add. Some buy carbon offsets for a site that takes 8 seconds to load, which is like buying a gym membership for your car.

A website’s footprint comes almost entirely from the data it ships. Every megabyte has to be stored, transmitted and rendered, and all three steps burn electricity. The fix for emissions and the fix for speed are the same fix.

The principle

Lean is green, and lean converts. You never have to choose.

Across our 24 sites, the median page emitted an estimated 0.48g per visit. The Sustainable Web Design benchmark calls under 0.5g “good”, which means roughly half of the UK business sites we tested miss it. Our median page weighed 1.35MB against a global median of about 2.6MB, so UK trades and professional firms are not the internet’s worst offenders. But the gap between best and worst is enormous: 187KB to 8,308KB for the same job, telling a customer you can fix their problem.

Put real traffic on those numbers. At 1,000 visits a month, the heavy Sheffield site’s homepage alone accounts for roughly 35kg of CO2 a year. The lean competitor: under 1kg. That 35kg is like boiling the kettle five times a day, every day, for a year. Hardly a climate catastrophe, but it bought the business nothing, and the same waste is what makes the site slow.

What actually shrinks a website

Images do most of the damage. The 8.3MB site carries 83 homepage images. Another site in our test carries 206. Compress images, resize them to the size they display at, and use modern formats. This is an afternoon’s work and it routinely cuts page weight by half or more.

Delete before you optimise. The median site in our test made 60 requests to load one page; the worst made 151. Sliders, chat widgets you never answer, three font families, tracking you never read. Every one of them costs carbon, speed and money. Ask of each element: does this help a customer decide to call?

Then, and only then, look at green hosting. Moving to a renewables-powered host (you can check any host free via the Green Web Foundation) improves the footprint of whatever you serve. But greening the delivery of an 8MB page is polishing the wrong end of the problem. Shrink first.

The honest caveat

Your website is a small slice of your business’s footprint. If you run diesel vans, the vans dwarf the website. Do not put a leaf icon in your footer off the back of image compression. Under UK advertising rules, vague green claims invite trouble.

The case for a lean site is simpler than saving the planet: every wasted megabyte slows the site, costs bandwidth and loses enquiries, and the carbon saving comes free with the fix.

The takeaway

You do not need a sustainability strategy for your website. You need a lighter website, and sustainability falls out of it as a side effect, along with faster loads and more calls.

The greenest megabyte, like the cheapest marketing pound, is the one you never spend.
