Insurance Broker Marketing Guide UK 2026

Marketing for insurance brokers

Ask an AI engine for a business insurance broker and the answer mixes three different jobs: brokers, independent financial advisers and comparison sites. They hold different FCA permissions and sell different things, but the answers treat them as one trade. A broker whose FCA entry, permissions and firm reference number are stated plainly is the only name in that list a customer can actually verify.

The right order for insurance brokers

Do the stages in order. Nothing in Build works while Start is missing.

Start, Build, Scale for insurance brokers: the free foundations first, then systems and proof, then measurement.

Start

  • FCA firm reference number in plain text on every page, register entry linked
  • A plain sentence on what you are: insurance broker, not an IFA, not a comparison site
  • Trading name and legal entity matching your FCA entry exactly

Build

  • One page per sector you broke for, trades, hospitality, professionals
  • Renewal-time review requests naming the sector and the claim handled
  • A claims-story page: what you did when it went wrong, anonymised

Scale

  • Track enquiry-to-policy rate by sector
  • Referral lines with accountants and trade bodies
  • Drop sectors where you cannot beat the direct price

What we know, and what we have not measured yet

Whito has not yet run a study on this trade, so this page quotes no premiums, no commission rates and no invented findings. The first broker study is specified in the research stub below: ask for a business insurance broker in 12 UK towns, check every name’s FCA status, and count the IFAs, the comparison sites and the not-authorised.

What we can already say from the register: firms arranging insurance need FCA authorisation with the right permissions, the register records each firm’s permissions and trading names, and “IFA” describes a different job with different permissions, however often the engines swap the labels.

The wider picture across every industry we track is in the UK AI Visibility Index.

Whito need-to-know for insurance brokers

  • Your FRN is your register line. Six digits a customer can put into the FCA register and watch come back green. Most broker sites bury it in the footer small print; the check deserves a sentence of its own.
  • You are not an IFA, say so. Engines file brokers under financial advice constantly. A plain paragraph on the difference wins the customer who was sent to the wrong trade.
  • Trading names are recorded. The FCA register lists a firm’s trading names. A brand the register does not know fails the only check that matters here.
  • The comparison site is not your competitor on service. It cannot advise, negotiate mid-term changes or fight a claim. Every page should quietly prove one of those three.

Why authorised brokers lose to labels that are not theirs

AI answers send insurance questions to IFAs and investment questions to brokers, because the labels blur in training data. The broker who defines the difference on their own site is quoting the correction every engine needs.

THE SPLITBroker, IFA, comparison site, or not authorised. Our study will class every recommended name.

The comparison-site shadow

Aggregators dominate the generic searches with permissions that stop at introduction. Nothing in the answer tells a customer who will actually stand with them at claim time.

REGISTER FACTThe FCA Financial Services Register records each firm’s permissions and trading names, searchable by name or firm reference number.

The unrecorded brand

A broker brand that does not match an FCA entry, after a merger or a rebrand, fails verification by customer and engine alike.

CROSS-INDUSTRY30% of UK tradespeople we checked could not be verified at Companies House (Whito, July 2026).

What actually works

Six things, in rough order of return.

Put the FRN in a sentence

“Authorised and regulated by the FCA, firm reference 000000, check us on the register.” Linked, on every page, not just the footer.

Write the three-jobs page

Broker vs IFA vs comparison site in plain English. It answers the engines’ commonest confusion under your name.

Match brand to register

Every trading name you market should appear on your FCA entry. Fix the register or fix the brand, but make them agree.

One page per sector

A builder, a landlord and a restaurant owner search differently and buy differently. Generic “business insurance” pages win neither search nor citation.

Tell claims stories

Anonymised, specific, outcome-first. The claim handled well is the product; nobody buys it from a price table.

Ask for reviews at renewal

Renewal is proof the relationship worked. “Found cover after two refusals, handled the flood claim” sells broking better than any rate.

Common mistakes

“FCA regulated” with no FRN

The claim is true of thousands of firms with completely different permissions. The number is what makes it yours; without it the phrase is wallpaper.

Accepting the IFA label

Letting directories and engines call you an IFA invites customers you cannot serve and regulatory descriptions you do not hold. Correct it everywhere you control.

Competing with aggregators on price alone

Their model is volume without advice. Meet them on price and you fight without your only weapons: permissions, advice and claims.

The FCA register. Permissions, by firm reference number.

Firms arranging or advising on insurance in the UK must be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority, and the Financial Services Register is the public record: permissions, trading names and status, searchable by name or firm reference number. Brokers, IFAs and comparison sites hold different permissions for different jobs. The register is how a customer tells them apart in two minutes, and most never look.
