Drainage Company Marketing Guide UK 2026

Drainage and drain unblocking

Marketing for drainage companies

Drainage is bought in a panic, by phone, from whoever can be found and checked in minutes. This page covers the part you control: whether the person with the blocked drain, and the AI engine answering them, can find you, check you and ring you before a reseller takes its cut.

90%
of Google AI Mode answers cited the business’s own website (Whito, August 2026)
83%
of Google AI Mode trade answers cited Checkatrade (Whito, August 2026)
30%
of UK tradespeople checked could not be verified at Companies House (Whito, July 2026)
45.5%
of independent UK small business websites publish any price at all (Whito, August 2026)

FINDING

Checkatrade was cited in 50 of the 60 Google AI Mode answers Whito collected for electricians, plumbers and roofers across 20 UK towns on 22 August 2026, 83%, while only 9% of UK homeowners rate a builder’s website among their top three factors.

What we know, and what we have not measured yet

Whito has not yet run an AI visibility study on drainage firms. The figures above come from cross-industry work: 159 Google AI Mode answers logged in August 2026, 64 tradespeople checked against Companies House in July 2026, and 200 independent business websites read for our price transparency study in August 2026. They describe the trades as a whole, so treat them as background rather than a drainage-specific verdict.

What we have measured for neighbouring trades is blunt. When we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode for electricians and roofers, around half the recommended firms could not be matched to an active registered company in the town named. The engines are already answering “emergency drain unblocking near me”. The question is whether they can read anything about you.

When the drainage engine study runs, it lands on this page first, including the question no one has published an answer to: how many of the firms AI engines name for drainage are national resellers trading under town names. Until then, the AI Visibility Index shows how the method works across eight other sectors, and every drainage figure Whito holds, dated and sourced, lives on the UK drainage statistics page.

Whito need-to-know for drainage firms

  • One register has legal force. A firm that carries waste away must be on the Environment Agency waste carrier register: registration £191.02 unless you only carry waste you produced yourself, upper tier renewal £130.25 every three years, unlimited fine without it (gov.uk, read 6 September 2026). Publish the number on your homepage.
  • Much of what looks local is not. The sector is full of national call-centre brands trading under town names. A searcher cannot tell. A firm that can prove it is local, with a Companies House record, a real address and one phone number everywhere, holds the edge the resellers cannot copy.
  • The trade bodies are proof, not law. The National Association of Drainage Contractors lists over 350 certified members and runs a member directory, at £400 a year. The Water Jetting Association unified its codes into the WJA Black Code in 2026. Both checked at source on 6 September 2026. Name them in text if you hold them, never as an unlinked badge.
  • The search is an emergency and the conversion is a phone call. “Blocked drain” plus a town is searched by someone standing in the problem. Everything on your site exists to make one phone number tappable in seconds.
  • Silence on price has a benchmark. Checkatrade publishes £85 average for an unblock, £60 call-out, £180 emergency call-out, £185 jetting and £150 to £300 for a CCTV survey (updated June 2026, read 6 September 2026). If you publish nothing, those are the numbers your customer sees.

Why most drainage firms struggle to get found

Invisible at the moment of panic

The homeowner shortlists on Google and, increasingly, inside AI answers. In our June 2026 study, 35% of top-rated tradespeople had no website at all for an engine to read, only a Google listing.

Quick take The engines quote what they can read, and a firm with no site and no service pages goes unmentioned at 9pm.

Renting the emergency

Per-lead resellers sell the same 9pm search your own Google profile would catch for nothing, and many bid on your town name against you. Checkatrade appeared in 83% of the AI trade answers we logged.

Quick take Log which paid leads became jobs for ninety days before renewing anything.

Indistinguishable from the call centre

Registered under one name, trading as another, listed on Google as a third. Three records that disagree read as three flaky firms, and engines name somebody else.

Quick take One trading name, one phone number, and the company number written on every record. It costs nothing.

What actually works

In this order. Do not skip to ads.

A complete Google Business Profile

The drainage category rather than plumber, your real trading name, the service area you will drive to at night, dated photos of the van, jetter and camera rig. Free, and it carried 81% of the AI answers we logged.

Proof in plain text

Company number, Environment Agency waste carrier number, NADC or WJA membership written as text on your site, not hidden in a badge image. Machines cannot read a JPEG of a logo.

Reviews that name the job

Ask on the day, while the relief is fresh. “Collapsed drain found on camera in Long Eaton, fixed next morning” ranks. “Great bloke” decorates.

A page per job type

Unblocking, jetting, CCTV surveys, lining and repairs. One page each, in plain sentences an engine can lift whole. These are the pages search and AI engines quote.

Published ranges for standard jobs

Unblocking, jetting and surveys are quoted blind over the phone anyway, so publish the ranges with a dated line. Hold back repair prices and say they are quoted from the survey footage.

Stop buying shared leads first

Before any paid channel, cancel the leads that three or more rivals also receive. Reinvest the same money in the five items above, which you own outright.

Quick wins this week

1

Put your proof in the footer

Company number, waste carrier registration number and one phone number, typed as text on every page of your site and into your Google profile. Under an hour, free.

2

Text your last ten customers

Ask for a Google review that names the job and the town. Emergency customers are grateful and say yes.

3

Publish three price ranges

Unblocking, jetting and CCTV surveys, each as a range with a dated “prices checked” line. Done in an evening, and it beats the fear of the unknown call-out fee.

Common mistakes

Buying leads before the free fixes

Every paid lead lands on whatever your public records already say. Do the zero-pound weekend first, then decide what still needs buying.

Stuffing keywords into your business name

Google ran an algorithmic suspension wave in April 2026 that hit thousands of service-area profiles. “Dave Smith Drainage Best Blocked Drains Derby” is a suspension risk, not a strategy.

Wearing badges you cannot back

An unverifiable logo is the fastest way to look like the call centre you are trying not to be mistaken for. Name only the registers and memberships a customer can check, and link them.

The register that matters

Drainage has a legal register. Publish your number.

A business that carries waste away, and a drainage firm tankering or bagging what comes out of a drain is carrying waste, must be on the Environment Agency waste carrier register. Registration costs £191.02 unless you only transport waste you produced yourself, upper tier renewal is £130.25 every three years, and the fine for operating unregistered is unlimited. The register is public, so anyone can check a number in seconds. The voluntary schemes worth naming in text on your site: the National Association of Drainage Contractors, a members association with over 350 certified members and a public company directory, at £400 a year. The Water Jetting Association, whose training and codes of practice set the safety standard for jetting work, unified in 2026 into the WJA Black Code. All checked at source on 6 September 2026. If none of this is written on your website in plain text, no engine can use it and no customer can check it.

Looking for a drainage firm instead?

Whito is a marketing guide for the trade, not a booking site. If you are trying to hire, the Whito directory lists verified UK businesses, and every listing is checked against the public record before it appears.

Whito is independent and companies cannot pay to appear in our guidance. This page is marketing advice, not legal or environmental compliance advice: check registration and code requirements with the Environment Agency, the NADC and the WJA themselves.
