Google’s AI answers have now landed properly in the UK. The search box you have spent years trying to climb is quietly answering for you, before anyone reaches your website.
Here is the part most small business owners have not clocked yet. You can rank on page one, be quoted in the AI answer, and still get no visit. The customer reads the summary at the top and moves on. You were useful. You just were not chosen.
“Your business can be useful, cited, and still lose the visit. Ranking was never the prize. Being chosen is.”
What Happened
Google’s AI Mode and AI Overviews are now showing for UK searches. When they appear, the normal blue links get pushed down the page, often by a full screen on a phone.
The early data is blunt. Click-through rates on affected searches have dropped sharply. Informational and how-to content has been hit hardest, because that is exactly the sort of question an AI summary answers in three lines.
So the traffic you used to earn by writing a helpful “how to” guide is the traffic most at risk.
Why it matters for you
Most small businesses have been sold one idea about Google: rank higher, get more clicks. For years that was roughly true.
It is now only half the story. There are two jobs, not one. The first job is still to be found. The second, and newer, job is to be the business the AI actually points people toward. Those are different things, and the second one is not won by stuffing in more keywords.
AI answers favour businesses they can understand clearly. If your name, your offer and your location say one thing on your website, something slightly different on your Google Business Profile, and a third thing on an old directory listing, the machine gets confused. Confused businesses do not get recommended.
This is a structure problem. And structure is fixable.
What to do about it
This sits firmly in the Build stage. You are not chasing a clever new tactic. You are tightening the foundations so you get chosen, not just found.
- Make your business say one thing everywhere. Open your website, your Google Business Profile and your main directory listings side by side. Check the name, description, services and location match word for word. Fix the ones that drift.
- Answer real questions in plain English. AI pulls from content that gives a clear, direct answer. “How much does a kitchen fitter cost in Leeds” beats “Our bespoke culinary installation solutions” every time.
- Stop relying on traffic you do not own. A simple email list, captured from your site, is the most reliable channel you can build. The visit might vanish. An email address does not.
- Track conversions, not just rankings. Ranking reports are about to get less honest. The number that still tells the truth is enquiries and sales.
Ranking was never the prize. Being chosen is. The businesses that win the next year are the ones a machine can understand in one read. Get your message consistent, answer questions plainly, and own a channel that no summary box can take from you.
