The short version
- A new industry has sprung up overnight selling AEO and GEO tricks to get you recommended by AI. Most of it is hype.
- The shift to AI search is real and here to stay. The specific hacks being sold around it mostly are not.
- Google’s own guidance is blunt: optimising for AI search is still SEO. The fundamentals carry over.
- Do the durable work, clarity, consistency, reviews, mentions, and ignore anyone promising a secret AI ranking trick.
Six months ago almost nobody had heard of AEO or GEO. Now your inbox is full of it. Answer Engine Optimisation, Generative Engine Optimisation, AI SEO, each one promising to get your business recommended by ChatGPT before your competitors. The pitches are urgent, the acronyms are new, and the prices are not small.
Here is the part the pitches leave out. The thing they are selling is, for the most part, the thing you should already be doing. The shift to AI search is genuine and worth taking seriously. The bandwagon of tricks built on top of it is mostly noise, and some of it will cost you money for nothing.
The mistake: treating AI search as a brand new game
The hype relies on you believing that AI search is a separate discipline with its own secret rules, which conveniently only the seller knows. It is a good sales story. It is not how it works.
When researchers and the search engines themselves looked at what actually gets a business named by AI tools, the answer was familiar. Clear content. A complete, consistent business profile. Recent reviews. Being mentioned on trusted sites. Those are not new tricks. They are the same fundamentals that have helped businesses get found for years.
The reframe: AEO is still SEO
This is not just our view. Google’s own 2026 guidance, when asked directly whether traditional optimisation still matters for AI search, said plainly that it does. Optimising for answer engines is still SEO. Optimising for generative tools is still SEO. The front door has changed, the building behind it has not.
That matters for a small business because it means you are not starting from zero, and you do not need a new budget for a new specialism. The work that makes you easy for a customer to choose is the same work that makes you easy for a tool to recommend.
What actually lasts
Spend your effort on the things that will still be true whatever the tools do next. Be clear about what you do, where, and who for, so a person or a machine can understand you in one read. Keep your name, address and phone consistent everywhere. Earn recent reviews, steadily. Get mentioned on the directories, local press and industry sites that trusted sources read. Lay your information out in plain questions and answers. None of that goes out of date when the next model ships.
What to ignore
Be wary of anything sold as a secret AI ranking trick, a one-off “get into ChatGPT” service, or a tool priced for a corporation and pointed at a corner shop. Tactics that game a specific model this month tend to stop working the month after, and you are left having paid for a hack with no foundation under it. If a pitch cannot explain how its advice still helps you when the tool changes, that is your answer.
This is the honest, less exciting truth. There is no shortcut. There is just the same clear, consistent, well regarded business, now being read by a machine as well as a person. Get the fundamentals right and you are covered either way. Chase the hacks and you are renting a result you do not own.
Common questions
Is AEO really just SEO? In the ways that matter to a small business, yes. The behaviour has changed, the groundwork has not, which is why the fundamentals still win.
Should I pay an agency for this? Pay for delivery if you are short on time, not for a promise of secret tricks. The durable work is work you could do yourself.
