Google has started testing a new kind of advert, and it changes the job most UK business owners think they are paying for.

At Google Marketing Live, Google announced ad formats built on its Gemini AI. The headline one is called Conversational Discovery Ads. Instead of matching a keyword to a headline you wrote, Gemini reads the exact phrasing of someone’s search and builds the ad response on the spot. There are also AI powered shopping ads that write a custom explainer for why your product fits a specific search, and a Business Agent that replaces your lead form with a chat that answers questions using content pulled from your site.

These are in testing in the US now. They will not stay there.

“The ad is no longer something you write. It is something the AI assembles from what you have already published.”

What actually happened

For twenty years, a Google ad was something you controlled. You wrote the headline. You picked the keyword. You pointed it at a landing page. The skill was in the writing and the bidding.

That model is being turned around. In these new formats, Google’s AI decides what to say about your business, in the moment, based on what it can find about you. Your product data. Your service descriptions. Your reviews. The actual words on your pages.

Why it matters for a small business

Here is the uncomfortable part. You can no longer buy your way past a weak website.

If your pages are thin, vague, or three years out of date, that is the raw material Gemini has to work with. It cannot invent detail you never wrote down. A business with clear service descriptions, honest pricing, specific locations, and real reviews gives the AI something to build a good ad from. A business with a pretty homepage and no substance gives it nothing.

The businesses that win these formats are not the ones with the biggest budgets. They are the ones whose information is clean, detailed, and specific. That is the same quality that wins in AI search results, in Google’s core updates, and in map listings. One fix, several payoffs.

The mistake most owners will make

Most owners will treat this as an ad settings problem. They will ask which campaign type to switch on and move on.

That is backwards. Turning on a new ad format that reads a weak website just means the AI describes your business badly to more people, faster. The ad budget is not the lever here. The website is.

Structure before scale. Fix what the AI reads before you pay to amplify it.

What to do this week

You do not need a rebuild. You need an audit. Work through it in order.

Start: check the basics

Does every service have its own clear description in plain English? Is your pricing or price range stated, not hidden? Are your locations and areas served written out?

Build: add the proof

Real reviews on the page, not just a star rating. Specifics like how long you have traded, what is included, your turnaround, your returns or guarantee terms.

Scale: then advertise

Only once the above is solid, look at the new ad formats. By then Gemini has something accurate to pull from, and your organic AI visibility improves at the same time.

The takeaway

The line between your website and your advertising has gone. Google’s AI now writes your ads out of your own pages, so a thin website is now an advertising problem, not just an SEO one. Sort the substance first. The clever ad formats only work as well as the business behind them.
