Marketing for security companies
Security is a licensed trade where the trading name on the website and the licensed entity behind it drift apart, and where door supervision and security guarding are different licences. AI engines check neither. A Companies House record does not mean a firm can put staff on a door. If your names match and your licence types are stated, you are already ahead of the answers.
The right order for security companies
Do the stages in order. Nothing in Build works while Start is missing.
Start, Build, Scale for security companies: the free foundations first, then systems and proof, then measurement.
Start
- Trading name, legal entity and company number stated together on every page
- Licence position in plain text: which SIA licence types your staff hold, ACS status if you hold it
- Who-we-serve page: venues, sites, events, with the licence type each needs
Build
- One page per service, each naming its licence type
- References from named sectors, pubs, construction, retail, asked for at contract renewal
- An out-of-hours answer route: security is bought at night
Scale
- Track bid-to-contract rate by sector
- TUPE-ready processes for taking over contracts
- Drop one-off jobs that never renew
What we know, and what we have not measured yet
Whito has not yet run a study on this trade, so this page quotes no guarding rates and no invented findings. The first security study is specified in the research stub below: ask for a security firm and for door staff in 12 UK towns, match every trading name to the licensed business, and note the licence type behind each recommendation.
What we can already say from the public scheme: individuals working licensable roles hold SIA licences by type, door supervision and guarding are not the same licence, licences are checkable on the public licence checker, and the SIA’s Approved Contractor Scheme is the business-level mark.
The wider picture across every industry we track is in the UK AI Visibility Index.
Whito need-to-know for security companies
- Door supervision is not guarding. A venue asking for door staff and a site asking for guards are buying different licences. Pages that name the licence type answer a question the engines cannot.
- Trading names drift. The brand on the van, the entity on the contract and the name the SIA knows can be three different strings. Every mismatch fails a check you want customers to make.
- A company number is not a licence. Companies House proves incorporation. It says nothing about whether anyone in the firm may lawfully stand on a door.
- Buyers check, consumers do not. Procurement teams know the SIA checker exists; the public does not. Teaching the check on your own pages wins both.
Why licensed firms lose contracts to lookalike brands
The name that fails the match
A strong trading name with no visible legal entity cannot be matched to its licences. Our study will try exactly that match, and the firms that fail it are handing work to the ones that pass.
The wrong-licence recommendation
Engines recommend guarding firms for door work and door firms for guarding, because nothing in the answer carries the licence type. The page that states types wins the corrected enquiry.
The incorporation costume
An active company with a security-sounding name looks legitimate to an engine. Incorporation is not authorisation, and the trade’s rogue end lives in that gap.
What actually works
Six things, in rough order of return.
Match your names
Trading name, legal entity, company number, together, on every page and every contract. The match is the check; make it succeed first try.
State licence types, not “SIA approved”
Name the types your staff hold. If you hold Approved Contractor status, name that separately, it is a different thing and procurement knows it.
Teach the licence checker
A short page showing how to check a badge on the SIA checker. Firms that teach the check never fear it.
One page per service, licence type attached
Door supervision, guarding, keyholding, events. Each its own search, each its own licence story.
Sell the paperwork
Insurance, vetting standard, TUPE experience. Contracts are won by the firm whose admin looks safest.
References by sector
A pub reference wins pubs, a site reference wins sites. Ask at renewal, when the relationship is proven.

Common mistakes
“SIA approved” as a blanket claim
The SIA licenses individuals and approves contractors under a named scheme. The blanket phrase blurs both, and a procurement reader marks it down on sight.
Marketing the brand, hiding the entity
Every acquisition and rebrand that detaches the public name from the licensed business makes the firm less checkable, and less recommendable.
Quoting without the licence type
A guarding rate quoted for door work is a wrong number. State the type before the price and the comparison stays honest.
The SIA. Licences by type, checkable by badge.
Individuals in licensable security roles must hold an SIA licence for the specific activity, door supervision and security guarding among others, and licences are checkable on the SIA’s public licence checker. The individual licence fee is £204 from April 2026 (gov.uk, read 5 October 2026). The business-level mark is the Approved Contractor Scheme. A Companies House record alone does not put anyone lawfully on a door.
