A contractor holds a contract to build something and does, or manages, the physical work. Main contractors run a whole job and hire others. Specialist contractors do one part of it, such as tunnelling, piling or cabling.

How to check a firm in this group
Check the legal company, not the brand or the joint venture. On HS2, for example, the builders are joint ventures, and we found no registered company for any of them. Look up the member firms instead. Our note on legal names and hoardings shows how.
At Companies House, look at the filing history for accounts and confirmation statements, and read the accounts themselves rather than a press release.
